Pair of vintaage Ernest Race high stools for sale by & in support of Isabel Hospice (ends 3 Feb, 2015 20:31:32 GMT)

If you’re any good at furniture DIY, here are a couple of doer-uppers you might like to take on as a little project. A pair of well-worn but classic mid century modern high stools designed by Ernest Race.

They’d be perfect for perching at a breakfast bar in a vintage 50s-inspired kitchen… or teamed with the cocktail cabinet we featured last week.

They’re up for sale by Isabel Hospice* and, although there’s still just over 3 days left to bid, they’ve already had quite a lot of interest. They’re currently £41.00 the pair – bargain! – and a mere £7 for delivery but they’d prefer it if the successful buyer collected in person from Welwyn Garden City.

*Isabel Hospice is a charity needing to raise nearly £4 million per annum to provide their free services to the people of eastern Hertfordshire. Their ethos is that they treat the whole person, not simply the illness. They offer a complete hospice service through their team of Community Nurse Specialists, a 16-bed, in-patient hospice, a day hospice, outreach day hospices, hospice at home and a family support and bereavement service.

Did you get a bit of money for Christmas? We’ve found something lovely on eBay for Charity to put it towards! This fabulous vintage Erik Buch rosewood folding bar is something to behold. Charity shops don’t often get such rare, high value, quality items – but Isabel Hospice* has got a winner here.

Their photos don’t do the piece justice at all; if you’d like to see what it looks like in all its glory have a look here, here and here. An example sold at auction in 2010 for just over £1,200, there’s one for sale on Etsy at the moment for £3,100 and another on 1stdibs for $3,000 (about £2,000). That makes this ones buy it now price of £1,250 spot on.

It’s such a well designed and thought out piece of furniture. Imagine rolling it out, opening it up and offering your dinner party guests an aperitif – all very Mad Men!

stainless steel & teak mid century companion set

We bought this fabulous 1950s/60s coal bucket & matching fireside companion set last week. Although there’s a good selection of great looking sets being manufactured today, we don’t come across many stylish examples from this period.

The only other ones that spring to mind are a couple of atomic sets that we sold many years ago. They’re usually very traditional looking affairs, often made of heavy brass, copper or wrought iron – this one is altogether more mid century modern in design.

It’s made of stainless steel with teak detailing. It was filthy when we bought it, but metal polish, wood oil and elbow grease has improved it no end. It’s heading off to our antiques centre space later on this week.
