Designer Desire: William Turner

Montage of William Turner artworks

William Turner (1920-2013), or William Ralph Turner to differentiate him from his more eminent namesake, is considered the last of the great Northern Industrial artists.

Famously, Turner was the only person to have painted L S Lowry’s portrait from life.

We have had a fair few of Will Turner’s paintings pass through our hands; all of them are pictured above. We bought them from Dave Gunning, the art dealer with a gallery in Todmorden who is credited with ‘rediscovering’ Will.

In 2005, there was a long overdue retrospective of his work that took place at Gallery Oldham for which an accompanying book was published – William Turner, An English Expressionist. Another monograph by Stuart Archer & Bill Clark was published in 2010.

Here’s a rare interview with the artist done by Granada’s North West Tonight news programme.

Designer Desire: Steve Capper

A few weeks ago, when we were looking for a photograph of Peter Stanaway, we came across an artist that he had a joint exhibition with last year, Steve Capper (b. 1944).

Capper has had a long and successful career as a painter as well as being an art teacher. He retired from the teaching profession in 1996; at the time, he had been head of the art faculty at a comprehensive school in Oldham. Since then, he has concentrated on pursuing his painting.

He has said of his style and composition:

My work is not a photographic image of a single place, but rather a composite of several places. I am attempting to capture the feeling and atmosphere of Saddleworth and the Pennines, focusing on the shapes and patterns formed by the clouds, fields and trees etc. My use of primary colours is to emphasise the forms created by these special landscapes. I have been painting still life pieces for over forty years since I came across the work of Picasso, Braque and Mattice. The format feels like an old friend and something I am comfortable with.

Steve Capper’s art is sold in a number of (mainly) Northern galleries including Ascot Studios, Gateway Galley, Red Rag Gallery and Trent Art.

By the way, we never found a photo of the elusive Stanaway!

Designer Desire: Peter Stanaway

We have a Peter Stanaway oil painting hanging above the fireplace in our living room. A friend asked online about it, so I searched for the blog post that we did about him. I couldn’t believe that we hadn’t done one; so here it is!

Peter Stanaway (b. 1943) is a Greater Manchester born, bred and trained painter. His work was influenced by Keith Vaughan. Fernand Léger and William Roberts. His subject matter, unsurprisingly, is often post-industrial views of Manchester and its environs; especially city streets, disused mills & chimneys and canals & locks. He also paints coastal and fishing scenes of Yorkshire, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and further flung locations.

Designer Desire: Gerald French

Portrait of Gerald French paintings | H is for Home

We’ve owned two huge examples of artworks by Gerald French, so it’s surprising that we’ve not featured him on our Designer Desire series before now. You can have a look at one of them here.

French (1927-2001) hailed from Bradford and attended Bradford School of Art part-time where he was a contemporary of David Hockney. We’ve included one of a few sketches he did of Hockney in our collage above.

There’s a small number of French’s works in public collections including The Hepworth Wakefield, Bradford Museums and Abbot Hall in Kendal, Cumbria.

Original examples of his work regularly come up for sale at auction – especially up here in Yorkshire.
