The power of disposable phone numbers

Enhancing privacy and security

A disposable phone number, by design, is a temporary and anonymous way to communicate, perfect for one-time verifications or any scenario where you wish to protect your real number from being disclosed. This ephemeral nature ensures that your personal contact details remain private, reducing the risk of spam, scams and unwanted contacts.

Simplifying online verifications

In an age where almost every online platform requires phone number verification, disposable numbers offer a seamless solution. They allow you to bypass these verification steps without compromising your privacy, making the process of setting up accounts on websites and apps both simple and secure.

Green vintage 1980s Viscount telephone and Swiss cheese plant | H is for Home

The rise of the mobile phone over the last couple of decades has obviously decreased the need for home versions, but many people still retain their land-line for various reasons – better reception, lower call costs, business use etc.

And, if you’re going to have one, it might as well be aesthetically pleasing. We picked up this early 1980s Viscount push button telephone at the flea market this week… well, who could miss this fabulous eye-popping green!

Produced by The Standard Telephone Company for British Telecom, it would sit perfectly in any self-respecting mid century modern interior – atop the teak telephone stool, sideboard or Ladderax shelving unit, perhaps.

We think it’s a beautifully designed piece – form and function working in harmony. You’ll find it listed on our web shop later on this week – price £30.

vintage cream coloured GPO telephone

We’ve chosen this lovely vintage GPO telephone as our favourite buy this week.

Not because it’s particularly rare or valuable, but because it’s always worth highlighting a design classic. This model doesn’t just look good – it’s solid and reliable too… and now manages to conjure up thoughts of tradition and nostalgia.

We like the warm, cream colour… and the original number for Wensleydale – an honest & reliable sounding place to match the phone itself! It’s perfectly usable today of course, although most people opt for the quicker push-button type… and mobile phones of course.

We bought it at auction – and the auctioneer’s young daughter (firmly of the iPhone generation) was very interested to know how such a contraption would have worked. “You have to turn the dial for each number?!” “You can’t move from room to room?!”. It doesn’t seem that long ago to us H is for Home oldies that mobiles weren’t in every pocket – and that this was the only option available.

Anyway, who said it’s not mobile? This model of GPO telephone has its own special carry slot, so you can wander round while you chat. Well, as far as its lead will allow, at least!

Charity Vintage: Orange rotary dial telephone

vintage orange rotary dial telephone for sale on eBay for Charity by The Prince Of Wales Hospice(ends 6 May, 2015 20:47:50 BST)

The Prince of Wales Hospice* is currently selling this vintage orange rotary dial telephone – very Mod! It would look fab in our kitchen but I’ve been banned from having any more orange items in the room!

A vintage dial phone is so much more enjoyable to use and hold. If I’m going to be on hold for 20 minutes waiting to talk to ‘customer services’, I’d much rather be on this than one of those ugly, flimsy ones that are being manufactured these days.

It’s in full working order and looks to be in really good condition – it was manufactured by Pye way back in 1974. The starting bid is only a tenner with £4 on top for delivery.

*The Prince of Wales Hospice provides specialist palliative care to those over the age of 18 with a progressive incurable illness. They provide our services free of charge to a catchment area of 170,000 people at a cost of £2 million per year but only about one-third of this is received from the NHS.
