If you like the idea of living in a one-of-a-kind home, the best way of going about it is by furnishing it with vintage furniture, fittings and accessories. Take this wonderful, pop-inspired diner, as an example.

I’m sure Genie didn’t somehow manage to decorate her home in one fell swoop. A place like this takes time and effort to evolve. As and when you find something you like at a boot sale, vintage fair or online marketplace – you snap it up.

From then on, you continue to seek out other interiors objects – in much the same way – that will go with your developing vintage vibe. Each time, you add and/or replace – trading up – with something better or more to your taste and liking. A vintage home is never truly ‘finished’ – always a work in progress!

Auction Alert: Sale of specialist vinyl and related items

Cream - Disraeli Gears

The auction that we’re alerting you to this week is a little different to the usual. It’s the sale of a load of vintage vinyl. Not the type you lay on your floor – but the type you listen to on a record player.

Justin often muses about the vinyl he’s let go – and how much he regrets doing it. This may be the opportunity for him (and for you, if you’ve done the same) to restart his collection. It’s all our era of music – and alas, many of the actual things that Justin has sold at one point or other in his life. There’s a huge range of 60s, 70s and 80s music from various genres; pop, rock, disco, punk, reggae and jazz. There’s Bowie, Hendrix, Prince, The Clash, The Smiths, Nirvana and Depeche Mode.

It’s a two-day auction – a sale of specialist vinyl and related items in 164 lots. It’s being held by Sullivans Auctions in Merthyr Tydfil, Mid Glamorgan.

  • Monday 13th June 2022, from 1pm (lots 1 to 1040)
  • Tuesday 14th June 2022, from 5pm (lots 1041 to 1820)

Buyers Commission Charge
A buyers commission Charge of 15% will be added to the hammer price.
Value-added Tax (VAT)
Where a lot is marked by a (*) in the auction catalogue VAT is payable on the hammer price at the standard rate of 20%

Bid via EasyLiveAuction which incurs a fee of £3.00 or 3% of the final hammer price.

As with all auctions – but especially with this one as condition is everything with vintage vinyl records – items are ‘sold as seen’ so it’s a case of caveat emptor or ‘buyer beware’. If you are interested in any of the lots, you can contact the auctioneers for a condition report before bidding.

Pop - Design, Culture, Fashion book on vintage 1960s/70s pop fabric

Pop! Design, Culture, Fashion 1956 – 1976 by Geoff Rayner, Richard Chamberlain and Annamarie Stapleton has just been published by The Antique Collectors Club.

The book accompanies an exhibition of the same name currently taking place at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London – on until 27 October 2012.

Its chapters move chronologically through twenty years of the Pop movement, from “Rock’n’Roll” in the mid fifties to “Punk” in the seventies. It encompasses Mod, the Swinging Sixties, Psychedelia, Op art, Hippy &  Glam – and as the book’s title suggests, weaves its way through fashion, art, music, technology, graphic design and interior design & decoration.

In 1957, British artist & early Pop exponent, Richard Hamilton described Pop as thus:

  • Popular (designed for a mass audience)
  • Transient (short-term solution)
  • Expendable (easily forgotten)
  • Low cost
  • Mass produced
  • Young (aimed at youth)
  • Witty
  • Sexy
  • Gimmicky
  • Glamorous
  • Big business

All the big names in Pop culture are name checked: Elvis, Cliff, Roxy Music; Warhol, Lichtenstein; Peter Blake, Martin Sharp; Mary Quant, Zandra Rhodes, Vivienne Westwood, Biba  – to name but a few!

The book investigates Anglo-American Pop, making fleeting mentions of a couple of Japanese designs. We wondered why the book wasn’t more international in its coverage, but onward reading brought us to realise that there was a good explanation for this. It wasn’t due to neglect! As Marco Livingstone wrote in his 1990 book, “Pop Art: A Continuing History”:

“Pop was destined to remain essentially a movement of the English speaking world and even more specifically of the United States and Britain… by definition, Pop could only flourish in a highly industrialised capitalist society…”

Many of the images included in the book, such as Andy Warhol’s banana album cover artwork for the Velvet Underground, are already well known to followers of the Pop movement. But with full colour illustrations on almost every one of the 272 pages, there are many we’d not seen before.

It’s far from being mere eye candy though. This is a hugely well-researched book – there’s a comprehensive introduction followed by extensive side notes accompanying the photographs… and if it makes you want to delve even deeper, the book supplies a comprehensive list of further reading sources.
