A space where you can peel off wet clothes & outdoor footwear and towel down a muddy dog before you enter the house properly is a really useful area. This rustic boot room is more than up to that job!

The walls and splash-back are painted in an easy-to-clean brilliant white eggshell. The sink is an up-cycled farm animal drinking trough; and is the perfect size for home-owner, Emma to give her border terrier, Sadie a quick bath. The sink stand and counter top are also made from re-purposed materials – old scaffolding boards.

Nosy chicken is optional!

How to make your home’s hallway more welcoming

How to make your home's hallway more welcoming

When it comes to redecorating, it’s not uncommon for people to overlook their home’s hallway. However, they’re very functional spaces within homes. For starters, your hallway can host your very own home-based art gallery – that is if you have a collection that’s worth showing off. Likewise, it can be instrumental in keeping your home’s internal temperature stable, despite the doors closing and opening all day. It’s also the initial place where you welcome guests into your home. Are you looking to brighten up your hallway? Here are some strategies to try.

Don’t be afraid to use colour

Incorporating colour into your hallway design is the way to go if you’re looking to impress your visitors. Fortunately, there’s no right or wrong colour scheme when it comes to transforming your space, so release your creativity . Neutral hues are timeless and create an light and airy feel. Bright, primary colours heighten the senses – especially if you go for a clash of colour and/or patterns.

However, it’s still important to consider factors about your space before deciding on colour schemes. For example, you can utilise a brilliant white lacquer or gloss paint if your hallway has no windows. As a tip, use this paint on both the skirting boards and the walls for an ultra-modern look.

Another option is to use a darker colour accent on your wall’s lower part and choosing a lighter shade on the upper section (above the dado rail) to make the space appear more spacious. In addition, incorporating colour on your stair risers can make an eye-catching statement in your hallway.

Include artwork in your hallway décor

If you’re an art enthusiast, express your personality through pieces displayed in your hallway. It’s a great way of embellishing your hallway without cluttering the area. Choose works of art that reflect your taste and complement the room’s décor. For instance, if you love Japanese art, visiting platforms like the Japanese Store will prove helpful. Creating a photo gallery wall of your loved ones in your hallway is another, more personal, idea you could consider.

Use mirrors to create the illusion of space

Mirrors reflect any available light to maximise the brightness in a room. Moreover, well-positioned mirrors can make a space appear larger. Therefore, it’s a smart idea to put mirrors to good use if your hallway is compact or dimly lit. Furthermore, they can enhance your hallway’s appeal by highlighting a treasured object in that space – giving you a 360º view of it. If you have a hole or an unpleasant stain on your wall, hanging a mirror over it will temporarily solve the problem until you have the time or finances to sort it out properly. Even if you have ample hallway space, mirrors can be the perfect artwork to incorporate into your design.

Suspend a pair of oversized architectural mirror to enhance a large hallway’s symmetry. Similarly, hanging a sculptural mirror above a console table directly opposite your front door can reflect more light into a small, dim hallway while giving it a more sophisticated feel.

Work with statement lighting

You don’t want to ignore the lighting when updating your hallway. While it’s needed for practical reasons to brighten up the space, it can be aesthetically pleasing at the same time. Fortunately, lighting options abound, so you can choose those that work for you and suit you taste. Wall lights are excellent options for smaller hallways or spaces with lower ceilings. Likewise, pendant lights can add elegance to your space, so make use of them if your ceiling height allows. Adding directional lighting to artworks or positioning a lamp fitted with an Edison bulb on a console table can make all the difference, so keep this in mind.

With summer looking like it’s finally here, we’ve been working from our sunny garden. We love our garden, it’s a little oasis filled with plants, flowers, insects and birds. This relaxing porch however, has had us a bit green with envy.

The rattan swing seat reminds us of Driving Miss Daisy, Steel Magnolias and Gone with the Wind. All films set in the southern United States where the weather suits the white-washed clap-board walls, cane furniture and savannah blinds.

Rustic porch of Firefly holiday cottage in Mawgan Porth, Cornwallcredit

What a glorious place to spend a warm summer’s evening! Gently rocking back and forth with a cold beer or glass of wine, taking in the view and watching the sun go down.

This rustic porch (and indeed the cottage to which it belongs) ticks lots of boxes for us in terms of materials and décor.

We like the combination of natural wood and stone in a building structure – and the introduction of cane, rattan and weathered metal works perfectly with it.

The look is carried through the various connecting spaces – flowers, textiles and furs softening the harder edges.

If you’re equally taken by the idea of spending some time here – well you can! The cottage is situated in Cornwall and available to rent for holidays (dogs allowed too).

Hopefully we’ll be lighting that fire and rocking in those chairs one day soon!
