We love mid-century modern furniture here at H is for Home. The classic designs of the era can be incorporated into any furnishing scheme. Pieces can look equally good in a contemporary minimalist space or rustic barn conversion. Our only advice would be to give them a little room to breathe and be admired.

If you decide mid-century modern is for you, there’s another decision to make – whether to buy original vintage pieces from the 1950s & 60s or go for modern classic reproductions.

We’ve put together a  little montage of classic mid-century pieces – the modern reproductions alongside images of these design icons in original advertisements, photo shoots, magazines & film sets.

Good quality reproductions will provide you with the look you desire at a fraction of the price of a vintage original.

Availability is also guaranteed – sourcing original pieces in good condition can be a very time-consuming process.

Whilst some people insist on the authenticity and history of the original, the aged look or indeed pre-owned isn’t everyone’s cup of tea either. Many people like new items for their home to actually be new and look absolutely pristine.

We’re big fans of vintage, but modern reproductions can also be the perfect solution in some situations too.

We’ve just received this reproduction Charles Eames-designed DSW chair for review from Metro Furniture.

It works well as a dining chair, office or desk chair. It would also sit nicely in the corner of a bedroom or lounge too – providing a lovely flash of colour and offering an occasional seat for larger gatherings.

The DSW is available in eleven different colours, our favourite being this gorgeous, sunny yellow.

The chair arrives in 2 pieces and it’s an easy job attaching the moulded plastic seat to the metal & blonde wood base with the Allen key supplied. It’s a very affordable option retailing at just £50.00.

We think it looks great with a range of interior styles and we’ve combined it with mid century modern & antique furniture pieces whilst assessing it in our house. It sits very well with our 1960s fat lava floor vases, provided a good functional seat when combined with our rustic kitchen table or rustic pine workbench… and we love the contrast of the modern yellow moulded plastic with the rich, dark 18th century fruit-wood table that we tried.

Original pieces are fabulous, but they don’t always come within budget – especially if buying a set of 4 or 6 chairs. Metro Furniture offers a good alternative in the form of these practical and stylish reproductions.
