It’s a brand new year, so we thought we’d start a new blog series. Welcome to our first ‘Get their look‘ post. A fairly self-explanatory title, each week we’ll feature an image of an interior that has caught our eye and we’ll show you how and where to copy the style.

To kick off, we’re sharing this eclectic counter-top and kitchen shelving. They contain both practical and decorative items – many of which tick both these boxes.

We’re finally getting around to sorting out our home office. Boxes have been unpacked, bits of shop stock assigned to the correct storage area… and the printer has actually been moved off the floor and placed on a desk after 8 years!

We accumulate TONS of paperwork annually which we need to keep for at least 5 years for tax purposes. Recently, it’s been stored in random sweet and biscuit tins but it don’t look great. Utilitarian, yet beautiful, magazine files would look so much better! Each would be given an attractive label, marked with the tax year of its contents, lined up neatly (chronologically of course) and placed along a top shelf out of the way.

  1. Simple style brown kraft magazine file: £4.19, WH Smith
  2. Calculator magazine file: £7, Paperchase
  3. GARNER orange magazine file: £8, Habitat
  4. McGregor magazine holder: £25, Urban Outfitters
  5. KNUFF magazine file set of 2, plywood: £7, IKEA

The classic Orla Kiely repeat motifs of apple and flowers are lovely. We’re not sure what they’ll house yet, but we always seem to be on the look out for nice storage jars. And they were free – kind of!

We quite often make real espresso at home, but first thing in the morning the kettle and a teaspoon of instant is what we usually manage. It’s a good job we like this brand of coffee otherwise 3 jars might have been a real slog! 🙂

Gimme Five! Glass storage jars

selection of glass storage jars

We had a disaster this week. In the middle of the night, one of the shelves in our larder collapsed with a massive crash. On it was a dozen or so glass storage jars, full of rice, dried pulses, pasta etc. All but two of them smashed to smithereens with their contents exploding to the far corners.

They were mainly Le Parfait jars of varying sizes – here some of them are in this old photo – there were even more of them on the shelf at the time of the event. We had to embark on a massive, midnight clear-up operation – trying to keep the dog out of the way while we swept up shards of glass and millions of lentils with dustpan & brush. We still don’t know what caused the shelf to give way – it’s been there near on 5 years!

Anyhow, we’re in the market for some new glass storage jars. We looked at replacing like for like but we didn’t know how expensive Le Parfait jars are – we tended to pick them up here and there second hand at markets and charity shops. The smallest size is £5.25. Here are a few mainly cheaper – and equally attractive – options we’ve found.

  1. Vogue clip top preserve jars: from £2.39, Nisbets
  2. KORKEN food storage jars with lids: from 80p, IKEA
  3. Clip top preserving jars: from £1.49, Dunelm
  4. Kilner jars: from £1.50, Divertimenti
  5. Ella Sabatini square glass storage collection: from £6.99, Wayfair
