My ideal kitchen is a mixture of freestanding units, wall mounted cupboards, open shelves, perhaps a vintage kitchenette and a kitchen table as big as space allows. The latter would act as a kitchen island, relaxed dining table, food prep work space and package wrapping station.

This open shelving kitchen is pretty close to my idea of perfection! I love having tools, utensils and equipment close to hand. I enjoy seeing colourful ingredients and pretty packaging on full show – such as these Kilner jars full of cereals, pastas and pulses.

There’s also an easy mix of rustic antiques and contemporary fixtures & fittings which works very well.

Another open shelf shot for this week’s Get their look feature. This time it’s a pretty tea & coffee station shelfie pic. It’s only a small area, so included items need to be smartly edited down to the staples; favourite mugs, carefully coordinating/contrasting colours and counter-top space to make a brew.

Izzy aces it on all fronts; the varying shades of turquoise blue, the fun Edward Monkton canisters and the often overlooked underside of the bottom shelf utilised for hanging those aforementioned mugs. And the most practical thing about it? Her realistic artificial string-of-pearls plant – we managed to kill ours too!

Price Points: Modular shelving

Modular shelving | H is for Home

We’ve finally managed to find a place for some vintage Ladderax modular shelving that we’ve had stored away for a few months. A very large, very heavy vintage industrial unit has been sold, freeing up a large space in our lounge. We’ve now got lots of more versatile storage space available – and somewhere for our vinyl collection and record player at long last. We’re big fans of Spotify combined with wireless Sonos speakers dotted about the house, but you can’t beat the tactile experience and warm sound of vinyl sometimes.

Number 2 in our list comes closest in appearance to Ladderax. It has a mid century modern feel – simple and pared back in style with a combination of black metal and wood – very pleasing to our eye. Number 1 has acres of shelf space and a couple of drawers to hide things away too – neutral in colour and a good budget option. And I’m completely in love with the multi-coloured Cubit system – the various size options and graduated colours provide endless possibilities.

  1. FJÄLKINGE shelving: from £10 for a shelf, (£290 for combination shown), IKEA
  2. Tower shelving system: from £65 for a shelf (£1,056 for combination shown), Heal’s
  3. Multi-coloured library shelving: from £24 for a CD shelf (£4,306.77 for combination shown), Cubit

Price Points: Hexagonal shelves

Selection of hexagonal shelves | H is for Home

Looking at the three hexagonal shelves in the photo, can you tell which one is 15 times the price of one of the others? The cheapest of the trio costs £10, the most expensive comes in at £150. The intermediate one is £77.74 for three – around £25.91 each.

Most of us would rather have 15 of the cheapest ones than just the single costly one. Thanks to their hexagonal shape, they can be used in a modular fashion, arranged to fit to the shape of the space on your wall.

  1. Danish copper hexagonal shelf by The Forest & Co: £150, Notonthehighstreet
  2. Form oak effect hexagon shelf: £10, B&Q
  3. Minimalist geometric shelves – set of 3: £77.74, Etsy
