To each their own. I’ve been posting photos of our new coffee station on our personal Instagram stream recently. Mo has created for himself a metallic tea station; his copper Dualit kettle and toaster are complemented by brass kitchen utensils and a collection of wooden chopping boards (the latter he claims are for display purposes only!).

Go check out the rest of his squares… I’ve never seen so many lush and healthy looking houseplants in my life! Oh… and he has a beautiful, bright orange kitchen island!

Price Points: Unusual Easter flavours

Unusual Easter flavours | H is for Home

There are some strange people out there that prefer savoury to sweet. There are some even weirder people who don’t really care for chocolate. So, if you’re one of those, or know someone that’s like that, these unusual Easter flavours might appeal more than the usual fare.

  1. Hot cross bun tea: £3.99, teapigs
  2. Cheese Easter eggs: £8.50, Marks & Spencer
  3. Lakrids by Bülow Ægg – crispy caramel chocolate coated liquorice: £17.90, Sous Chef

We actually got sent some of the limited-edition hot cross bun tea to try out from teapigs. So we did a little afternoon tea taste test.

Teapigs hot cross bun tea bags

When I took one of the bags out of the box, I took a little sniff… am I the only one that does that? The scent was delicious, good enough to eat! The tea is flavoured with apple and cinnamon and completely caffeine-free. I made a brew, nice and strong; the taste was like a comforting dessert in a mug.

In fact, the dessert aspect might be expanded upon. I think I’ll make an afternoon tea loaf with dried fruit steeped in this tea… the flavours will be absolutely perfect.

The tea bags and packaging are all plastic free and recyclable or compostable. As it’s made from plant starch, you can pop the used bag or ‘tea temple’ as teapigs call it, in your food waste bin.

The perfect brew from Coffee & Kin

Coffee & Kin business card with espresso and chocolate | H is for Home

Happy May everyone! We’re delighted to be working with Coffee & Kin on this month’s competition. They’re a small, family-run business whose environmental ethos we back 100%. The company was set up by sisters Ruth & Kathryn and their husbands, Aussies, Mark & Chris (who also happen to be best friends) hence, the Kin. We’ve teamed up with them to offer one of our readers a month’s supply of coffee beans, pods or loose leaf tea.

Coffee & Kin founders - Ruth, Kathryn, Mark and Chris

Coffee & Kin supply 100% Arabica beans and Nespresso® compatible pods as well as a selection of whole leaf teas. Their coffee pods are compostable and the tea comes in biodegradable pyramids.

Coffee & Kin has established a Foundation to provide support to people & organisations in the communities where their coffee is grown. For each coffee pod they sell, they invest a penny into the foundation. For every bag of beans, it’s 10p. In their own words…

One of our values is to be honest and ethical in everything that we do. We care about our coffee farmers and the communities in which they live and work. Every Coffee & Kin coffee can be traced back to ensure that each stage of the growing and sales process is fair as well as socially and environmentally sustainable.

They’re based up in Alnwick, in beautiful Northumberland, and their single-origin coffee is roasted on the nearby Holy Island of Lindesfarne. We’ve tried out two different types of their beans; Peru and Rwanda. Both being Arabica, the roasts are mellow and contains less caffeine than the cheaper, more bitter counterpart, Robusta.

We tested the Rwandan beans first; the flavour is complex and creamy, with a touch of smoky sweetness. The Peruvian brew is well-rounded, intense and dry on the palate. Both are smooth and nicely acidic without being bitter. We liked them both very much. However, for our preference, the Rwandan just pipped the Peruvian in the taste stakes.

Price Points: Tea infusers

Selection of loose tea infusers | H is for Home

We drink a fair amount of tea in our house; never tea bags, always loose-leaf tea. Generally, we just put the tea leaves and pearls straight into the cup. Sometimes that’s fine, once unfurled and saturated the tea makes its way down to the bottom of the mug. Other times, bits float about on the surface… and get slurped into your mouth – nobody likes that!

On occasions like this, tea infusers are a great idea. They come in an array of designs and materials; stainless steel, silicone, ceramic and glass. I love the cheap-as-chips ones with comical designs, but this elegant stainless steel example is what’s needed in your bone china mug of smoky lapsang souchong.
