We love these cute little wooden Vikings – or noggins as they’re widely known.

These vintage examples date from the 1960s & 70s. We think the name ‘noggin’ must come from a children’s animation called ‘Noggin the Nog’ which Justin remembers well from his very early years. It was the brainchild of Oliver Postgate & Peter Firmin and is considered something of a cult classic. The Nogs had a distinct Viking look and saga tradition – here’s a rather charming clip.

There are lots of different noggins to search out – if you’re of the completest persuasion you might want to consider a small house extension… but we’re happy with our two little friends sitting on the shelf keeping us safe from intruders – Nogbad the Bad in particular.

P.S. If you’re wondering what the other piece of ‘vikingalia’ is in the background of the top photo, it’s a rather gorgeous pottery plaque by one of our favourite designers – Lisa Larson.

vintage white painted wicker sewing box on legs with blue lid

We picked up this vintage sewing box at a market last week. It’s made of wicker with blue plastic lid and weave detailing. We neatened up the interior with some matching floral fabric from the same 1960s era.

These boxes are perfect for sewers & crafters who love a bit of vintage – you’ll never waste hours looking for those elusive needles, threads or pins ever again!

selection of recently acquired vintage items including a G Plan nest of teak tables, orange seated Chair Centre stacking stools, green & blue striped curtains, Rhythm pedestal clock, Scandinavian teak mortar & pestle, Hinomoto vinyl camera bag and red & white Kleen Kitchen Ware jars

Here’s a quick peek at a few of our recent purchases.

We’ll start with fabrics – a lovely pair of heavy curtains with a striped pattern in blues, greens & turquoise – perfect for keeping out those coming winter draughts. There are more shades of gorgeous green and a groovy pattern in the duvet cover.

The pottery kitchen storage jars are from the Kleen Kitchen Ware range produced by Sadler – a classic 1950s look.

The pedestal alarm clock is by Rhythm  – its orange hour markers are a nice detail.

vintage 1960s Garrard radiogram in teak cabinet

On the very same day that we bought our previously-mentioned vintage Anglepoise lamp, we bought this fabulous 1960s radiogram.

We’d actually been on the look out for an amplifier to go with a record deck we had – but suddenly, as bidding was about to stop at £30, we couldn’t resist this beauty!

It’s a Garrard Dynatron – radio, record player and speakers – housed in a beautiful teak cabinet.

Not only does it provide music in  lounge – we think it’s a great looking piece of furniture. Streamlined & good proportions, it fits the space exactly – the teak is a lovely warm colour too.

Justin was very impressed with this particular feature… the slow, soft-close lid – no danger of precious records skipping, jumping or being scratched.

And most importantly – it sounds pretty good too!
