Reusable hand warmers

Are you getting out into nature over the Christmas period? It’s been forecast to be a lovely day on Christmas Eve, and we’re planning on going for a walk somewhere. It’s going to be sunny, but chilly, so we’ll need to dress up warm. Padded jackets, thermals and reusable hand warmers should do the job!

You can buy really cheap, single-use hand warmers that coast about a pound for two, but that’s unnecessarily wasteful. I like the idea of the natural ones that you can simply pop into the microwave just before you go out and stick one in each pocket and have toasty hands for a couple of hours… the average length of time of one of our Christmas walks.

  1. Huggable avocado handwarmer: £9.00, Urban Outfitters

Place a cup of water + huggable in microwave – Heat for 1 – 1.5 minutes (Heating time will vary depending on wattage) – Do not exceed 1.5 minutes – Let stand for 30 seconds before use
Content + Care – Polyester, buckwheat, lavender

  2. Wheat & lavender reusable hand-warmers: £9.50, Etsy

These natural wheat and lavender filled hand warmers can be heated in the microwave. Or used as a cold pack from the freezer (pop in a freezer in a sealable bag for 2-3 hours). 100% cotton medium weight fabric. Filled with cleaned wheat and premium dried lavender.

  3. Coopa quick-charge hand warmer: £29.99, Amazon

It takes only 3-4 hours for a full charge by using 18w charger. What’s more, it charges your iPhone to 50% in just 30 minutes.
It can provide up to 15 hours of heat.
From 95°F to 131°F, there are 3 levels of heat to choose from.

Price Points: Women’s walking trousers

Women's walking trousers

After a pretty decent summer, autumn is most definitely here… and so is the rain! I have one pair of waterproof bottoms that has seen better days, so I’m having a look at women’s walking trousers.

My old pair served me well on my daily dog walks, often out in that infamous Pennine weather. Now we’ve moved to an equally wet part of the country, the new pair is also going to have to be waterproof… or at the very least, water-resistant.

I really love the look of the mid-range Haglöfs pair – their cut and Velcro waist adjustment suits a curvy-hipped female figure. I also like the plethora of zipped pocket options – perfect if I’m carrying phone, camera, keys and money – nothing will slip out in the middle of a field or forest.

  1. Women’s Amelie III waterproof overtrousers, black: £19.95, Regatta

Waterproof and breathable Isotex 5000 coated polyester fabric
Part mesh, part polyester full lining
Adjustable, elasticated, drawcord waist to seal out the weather
Lower leg zips ensure a close fit around boots and shoes
Available in short, regular and long leg lengths

  2. Haglöfs Breccia: £100.99, TrekkInn

Non-membrane Flexable fabric with fluorocarbon free DWR treated surfaces provides the optimum balance of wind and water resistance, together with excellent breathability. 4-way stretch double weave reinforcement fabric
Comfortable waist with VELCRO® brand closure adjustable straps
Two laminated zippered hand pockets, two thigh pockets and one back pocket
Bottom leg with snap button adjustment

  3. Women’s Impendor FUTURELIGHT™ trousers: £270.00, The North Face

FUTURELIGHT™ is engineered using nano-spinning technology that adds air permeability to a waterproof membrane for the first time. On top of this, they’re made from recycled nylon and impregnated with a non-PFC durable water repellent, so it has excellent sustainability credentials, too. These outer layer trousers are packed full of features, like full side zips for easy on-off over a base layer and boots, and hems that are drawstring adjustable to fit snugly over different types of boots. The taped seams and the nature of the fabric ensure your range of motion isn’t restricted.

Price Points: Vacuum can coolers

Vacuum can coolers

With the recent run of hot, sunny days, we’ve been going walking and making trips to the beach. Before we set off, we pack up the car with what we’ll need for a day out; folding garden chairs and a couple of rucksacks. The rucksacks will hold things like a magazine or newspaper, sandwiches, fruit, biscuits and a hot drink in a flask.

After a long hike on a hot day, you don’t always fancy a hot drink. I love a cold can of refreshing ginger beer. Currently, if we want to bring a couple of tins with us, the contents will be warm by the time we get to our final destination. One solution would be to bring a cooler – but they’re big, bulky and heavy… and we sometimes walk for miles. The remedy? A pair of vacuum can coolers. Not the Neoprene ones that would let the cold escape from the top, but metal ones that are completely enclosed.

On this blog, we try to find products that are shipped from within the UK, but we couldn’t find many vacuum can coolers from local sellers. The ones we’ve chosen below are affordable – but watch out for P&P charges on top.

  1. YETI Rambler Colster original 16oz tall can adapter/extender and aluminium bottle: £12.28, Etsy
  2. Newdora can cooler, 3-in-1 stainless steel insulated vacuum cold cooler, white: £21.78, eBay
  3. BrüMate HOPSULATOR TRíO 3-in-1 stainless steel insulated can cooler, matte grey: £26.02, Amazon

Mushrooms add magic to our autumn walks

Large fly agaric

We love our countryside walks – we find them restorative and uplifting. In fact, the abundance of paths and trails on the doorstep was a big factor when deciding to buy this new house. Each season has its own charms… and now it’s the turn of autumn. Misty mornings, stunning leaf colours, fruits, berries and of course, mushrooms.

After a heavy night’s rain, we woke up to the sun breaking through on Saturday morning, so we headed out. We have lots of woodland close by, and the open access allowed by Welsh Forestry is fabulous. We saw buzzards, red kites – and a gorgeous hare that was nestling down in the track-side grass – who, sensing us watching him, shot off through the dense trees like a pale ghost.

It was also perfect conditions for fungi & mushrooms – and our walk was punctuated by some lovely specimens of which we duly took pictures.

We’re getting a little better at identifying the different species… although we’ve got a long way to go. We think our sightings included Yellow Stagshorn, Ochre Brittlegill, Common Earthball, Peziza Badia and the unmistakeable Fly Agaric to name a few. Please feel free to fill in any gaps in our mushroom knowledge (or mistaken identities!).

These little jewels of colour, shape and texture are such a joy. It’s amazing that all these different types of fungi were photographed in a relatively small area, on the same day.

And when we got home, our new Esse kitchen range (installed on Thursday) was chuffing away. We had freshly brewed coffee – and bacon sandwiches/cheese toasties respectively – what a joy after a couple of months with no cooker. The perfect end to a wonderful morning!
