Price Points: Metric scale weights

Metric scale weights

For years, I’ve used electronic scales for baking and for weighing out the dog’s food. We have a lovely set of vintage scales that never get used because I only have Imperial weights to go with them. Most of the recipes I turn to use metric measures.

Our current electronic scales don’t suit our ‘country kitchen’ vibe, so they’re kept hidden out of the way. Our vintage scales sit on the counter-top… but never get used. The solution is to get myself some metric scale weights, and I’ve found three contenders.

Although they’re beautiful, the expensive set won’t suit the old fashioned looking scales; and at over £50, I’d want a 1kg weight for when I’m weighing out flour for bread. I really can’t decide between the other two – the hexagonal ones are suitably rustic and still have their original box. However, I love the design of the Robert Welch ones –  they’re attractive and unusual. Which ones would you choose?

  2. Traditional Robert Welch cast iron metric weights: £30.00, Yester Home
  3. Mechanical metric kitchen scale weights: £53.99, Wayfair

Measure for Pleasure

section of a vintage metric measure tea towel

We recently featured some lovely vintage tea towels that we’d bought at auction. We’ve just acquired another one that we thought we’d share with you lovers of design from this era. This one dates from the late 60s/early 70s and features imperial & metric measurements.

Here it is in its spectacular entirety! It might only be a humble tea towel, but it’s really a period artwork. Fabulous design & wonderful colours. We think they’re great value – you can pick up unused examples like this one for about £20 – less if you’re lucky. Nicely framed for another £30 or so – and you’ve got a vintage, original and distinctive wall decoration for £50. Your piece of art might even be unique – most tea towels were actually used and thrown away when they became tatty. You might have the only one left!!

This one has gone into our own growing collection of textiles – now that would be a major framing bill! This one’s heading to the top of the pile, though, as we really fancy it in our orange kitchen!
