For over a decade, we’ve been small business owners, working from home. Sometimes we feel blessed to be in this position – we spend the whole day together, we answer to no one, there’s no stressful daily commute and we can choose when and where we work.
Often, this freedom can have the opposite effect; we work 7 days per week, we don’t work a traditional 9 to 5 and feel like we’re always ‘on call’. We can’t phone in sick or have a ‘duvet day’ – it can be difficult to achieve a healthy work life balance.
Therefore, we see it as timely that this month to be teaming up with Smart Home Need, a platform that aims to help you develop positive lifestyle habits through making your home a more supportive environment. Their mission in their own words…
Smart Home Need is a start up with social vocation. We believe in a well-being centric lifestyle, where the satisfaction of human Needs is the first step towards a more sustainable and healthy society.
In addition, Smart Home Need recommends a number of mobile phone apps and smart home technology solutions (which they call ‘pathfinders’) to help you develop and improve your lifestyle.
Smart Home Need is providing two of our readers with a one-year full ‘Flourish’ subscription (worth 49,99€ each). To enter, tell us in the comments section below what you do to achieve a healthy work life balance or improve your daily routine.

I prioritise my time and have set work hours.
Thank you Adelle and Justin for sharing this platform. On my side, one thing that I am trying to do is to define a daily agenda in advance. However, I’ve registered and realised that there’s still a lot I can do to improve my lifestyle… there are lots of considerations that I hadn’t thought of before.
I do work hard and so always try to make time for myself each evening to do something I love, even if its just a book
I always do yoga daily and go for a run then at night unwind in a hot bubble bath reading a book
I have removed my work email account from my mobile, so I am not tempted to check my inbox when I am at home. I also make sure I don’t work any more than 20% over my standard working hours, otherwise time just gets away from me!
I take regular breaks as working from home means that I can often get sucked in to working more hours than I had planned. I also like to time block my day to make sure that I get my important tasks done but still have time to do the things I want to do as well – they hold just as much priority if I have planned them into my day.
turn my phome of in the evening
I always make sure that each evening I switch off and do the things that I enjoy.
I try to plan ahead as much as possible!
I try and have a routine, but with lock down and home-schooling, its all gone out the window.
I don’t do anything as I have no time to do so being a full time carer for my mom.
I take ten minutes when I get home to meditate and remove all the work stuff from my head to enjoy downtime xx
Always try to stick to a routine and make sure we have some relaxation time every day
I always try to stick rigidly to a routine otherwise time spent on work can run away with me. I always set aside a bit of time to do something I enjoy too.
Put out of office on when I am not working.
I try and do housework every day instead of saving it all for the weekend so i feel like i have a proper break at the weekend
I make sure to seperate my time, not checking emails in personal time and taking time to myself completly
Spend the last 20 mins of work recording where I am at in current project and planning the following day so that I can switch off and relax when I leave.
I stick to regular work hours and have a walk before and after the working day to unwind
Switch off from work once home and try not to think about it until I’m next in!
We make sure we get time on trampoline/in garden, and sunday as a family
I try to have a strict cut off time when work stops, no “oh, I’ll just send that email or read that” before finishing. Then I close the door of the office and take myself off for a quick ten minute walk to demarcate the day.
I love to have a relaxing bubbly bath every week, and stay off any social media after 9pm x
making sure I shut away work and am not tempted to log on outside of normal working hours,
A good routine
I’m lucky in as much as when I leave work I don’t have to think about it, so I can switch over to family and home mode easily.
I used to have a job where I was always taking things home to do, and thinking about what needed to be done the next day so my balance was way off.
I have come off Facebook as I felt that I was was spending too much time endlessly scrolling when I could be having quality family time!
I don’t bring my work home – if need be I stay late so that work is work and home is home
i am trying to keep to a routine and do 20 mins activity a day
routine! I always make sure I have some ‘me time’ to unwind and de-stress too!
we have one free day a week technology free
make the most of time off
I try to work only in the mornings and the rest of the day is ‘mine’
Turn work-related phone off in the evening and take breaks
