I’m not a mother, but I’m sure many parents would agree with me that it would be wonderful to have a dedicated room in the house that you could simply put the kids into, close the door and leave them to it for a few hours. This boys’ playroom looks like the ideal set up to do just that!

There’s a practical bank of plastic drawer storage in different sizes; perfect for scooping up all their loose, scattered toys to just pour them back into place. The yellow metal low locker provides even more toy and book storage and lends a bright splash of colour too.

Modular furniture like the Zonky play sofa can be used in a myriad of ways; flat on the floor to lie and do drawings, or propped up to watch cartoons on the television. At the end of a day of play, they can be put back together like giant, soft Lego pieces.

Speaking of which, the Lego head as storage for little items like toy soldiers, plastic farm animals, Dinky cars and… well… Lego, is genius.

Just flip through the before & after (or is that the after & before) images in the carousel above – a place for everything, and everything in its place!

Things to watch out for when buying a new house

Things to watch out for when buying a new house

When you’re considering buying a new house, there are a lot of things to keep in mind. Here are some key things to watch out for:

1. Location, location, location

The old real estate adage still rings true today. The location of your new home can have a big impact on its value and your quality of life. Be sure to do your research on the neighbourhood before making an offer.

2. Size matters

Another important consideration is the size of the home. Make sure it’s large enough to comfortably accommodate your family and all your belongings. But don’t go too big – remember, you’ll have to heat and cool the entire space, so a huge home can be expensive to maintain.

3. Age is just a number

An older home can be just as good – if not better – as a brand-new one, as long as it’s been well-maintained. Pay particular attention to the condition of the roof, windows, plumbing and electrics and make sure any repairs are completed prior to your move.

4. Don’t forget about the garden

The garden is an important part of any home, so be sure to factor it into your decision. If you have young children or pets, you’ll want a safe and enclosed outdoor space for them to play. If you enjoy entertaining, look for a garden that has ample space for seating and cooking al fresco.

5. Get a home inspection

Before you finalise your purchase, be sure to have a professional home inspector take a look at the property. They’ll be able to identify any potential problems that could end up costing you money down the line. Remember to let a professional do a legionella risk assessment too.

6. Know your budget

It’s of paramount importance to stay within your available budget when buying a new home. Don’t allow yourself to be tempted by an expensive property that you can’t afford. Stick to your financial limitations to avoid ending up in debt or, worse, losing your home.

7. Have realistic expectations

Remember that no home is perfect, so don’t expect yours to be. Be prepared to compromise on certain features in order to get the home of your dreams.

8. Be patient

The process of buying a new home can take considerable time, so don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t happen overnight. Be patient, and eventually, you’ll find the perfect place for you and your family to put down roots.

9. Completion day

The day you take possession of the keys and officially become the home-owner, is known as “completion day.” This is the date from which you’ll be responsible for paying council tax, utility bills, home insurance, ground rent etc. Be sure to average out how much these will add up to and budget for these regular outgoings.

10. Maintenance and repairs

Owning a home comes with a lot of responsibilities, including maintaining the property and carrying out repairs when needed. Create a contingency fund for these costs, as they can strike unexpectedly.

In conclusion

Investing in property is a big decision, so be sure to do your research before buying a new house. Keep these things in mind, and you’ll be on your way to finding the perfect place for you and your family. Happy house hunting!

Designer Desire: Bernard Cheese

Montage of Bernard Cheese artworks

Last week, we were introduced to the brilliant work of Bernard Cheese through an upcoming auction of 20th century art at Prior Park in Bath. Bernard Cheese (1925-2013) was a British artist, printmaker and illustrator. He studied at Beckenham School of Art followed by the Royal College of Art between 1947 & 50. It was at the latter where his teachers included Edward Bawden.

Cheese was a tutor in printmaking at St. Martin’s School of Art during the 1950s & 60s, was a lecturer at Goldsmith’s College in the 70s and the Central School of Art and Design in the 80s.

He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers (previously the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers).

As part of the 1951 Festival of Britain – working with Bawden – he painted a mural on the Lambeth Lead Works Shot Tower. The tower was demolished in 1962 and the Queen Elizabeth Hall was erected on its site. In the same year, he produced the Pantomimes & Circuses poster for London Transport.

His work can be found in the permanent collections of the V&A, Tate Britain, Fry Art Gallery and Nottingham City Museums & Galleries. Apparently, The School of Art at Aberystwyth University owns 87 prints and 12 watercolours by Bernard Cheese, some of which were donated by the artist in June 2002, creating the largest public collection of his work and representing over four decades in Cheese’s career.

Prints of Cheese’s work and books that he has illustrated can be purchased from Amazon, eBay, Etsy , Hayletts Gallery and The Bookroom Art Press.

Price Points: Left-handed ice cream scoops

Left-handed ice cream scoops

It’s not easy being a left-hander and keen cook. There’s a long list of kitchen tools, gadgets and utensils that aren’t designed for us; scissors, knives, peelers, corkscrews, can openers, whisks, cooking spoons and spatulas. Not to mention lipped saucepans, mixing bowls and ladles – the list goes on and on!

When I searched the internet with a fine tooth comb looking for left-handed ice cream scoops, I only found one… one company – Stöckel – that makes them! Considering 10% of the world’s population are southpaws, other manufacturers are missing out on a lot of potential custom!

The other two will work well enough for both left and right handers. However, a scoop with a lever and ‘scooper’ (the narrow, semi-circular piece of metal inside the scoop that swivels) does a better job.
