If you like the idea of living in a one-of-a-kind home, the best way of going about it is by furnishing it with vintage furniture, fittings and accessories. Take this wonderful, pop-inspired diner, as an example.

I’m sure Genie didn’t somehow manage to decorate her home in one fell swoop. A place like this takes time and effort to evolve. As and when you find something you like at a boot sale, vintage fair or online marketplace – you snap it up.

From then on, you continue to seek out other interiors objects – in much the same way – that will go with your developing vintage vibe. Each time, you add and/or replace – trading up – with something better or more to your taste and liking. A vintage home is never truly ‘finished’ – always a work in progress!

Designer Desire: Malcolm Starr

Montage of Malcolm Starr fashion items

Malcolm Starr was born to be a somebody in fashion. His mother, Claire was a costume designer. His father, Frank Starr, was a well-known figure in the New York textile industry who, in the 1940s, founded the Malcolm Starr clothing company located at 530 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan’s garment district. When Starr senior died in 1969, Malcolm took over the business.

Some of the designer names associated with the Starr label include Bill Tice, Youssef Rizkallah, Elinor (Rizkallah) Simmons, Gino Charles and Carol Horn.

Elinor Simmons was a designer at the company from the early 1960s up to 1972. Youssef Rizkallah joined Starr in 1969, working there until 1975. Carol Horn was at the label during the early years of the 70s.

Those aren’t the only branches in the Starr fashion family tree. In 1966, Starr partnered with Teal Traina to form Gino Charles (a combination of the two men’s middle names). This line was designed by Alan Phillips.

There’s an iconic photograph of the model, Veruschka in 1965 wearing an eye-catching lime green Malcolm Starr maxi dress.

The fashion house continued to operate until 1976 when Starr sold it for a reported 7 million dollars.

In March 2008, Starr passed away following a fall at his Connecticut home; he was 84.

Vintage Malcolm Starr pieces are readily available online and at auction, especially in the USA. Try 1stDibs, eBay and Etsy.

Price Points: Outdoor drinks coolers

Outdoor drinks coolers

I’m sure you’ll be able to tell straight away which of these three outdoor drinks coolers I’d choose to own.

I absolutely love the egg yolk yellow drinks cooler from Outside Gang (#2) – it would match perfectly with our yellow bistro table & chairs. It’s available in a range of other colours, long or short legs and optional bamboo chopping board and champagne cooler. It can hold up to 10 bottles of wine or 25 bottles of beer in 2 litres worth of ice.

I could probably also opt for the Keter cool bar in another colour; perhaps the slate grey with lime green interior. I think the telescopic lid-to-tabletop mechanism is a great idea. I’ve even seen an illuminated option for this model.

The four hundred pound version has all the bells & whistles that you’d expect for something in this price range; huge capacity, exterior shelves & baskets, temperature control and castors for ease of movement. The only drawback for me is that it’s electric. A power cable will have to weave its way out of the house through a door or window to the spot in the garden that I want the cooler. The combination of an electrical lead and alcohol is an accident waiting to happen!

  1. Keter cool bar: £85.95, Amazon
  2. Drinks cooler: from £129.00, Outside Gang
  3. Lifestyle stainless steel 50L electric drinks cooler: £399.99, Robert Dyas
