Auction alert: The Contents of a Country House

Four pairs of antique treen boot trees

I do love a ready-made group of vintage items; handbags, copper jelly moulds, antique ironstone. There are so many types of collections from which to choose at the upcoming sale that we’re highlighting today; ironstone jugs, brass candlesticks, galvanised zinc buckets, shoe lasts, pen knives… The lot that jumped out, though, was the large piece by Rosslyn Ruiz – I recognised her work immediately; we once owned a similar piece – but it was orange.

To The Manor Born, The Contents of a Country House and Much Much More! takes place at John Rolfe Auctions in Tetbury, Gloucestershire. It’s scheduled for Saturday 21st October 2023, from 10am. In total, there are 1249 lots going under the hammer:

Watches, Clocks, Jewellery, Silver, Luggage, Ceramics, Glass, Treen, Metalware, Walking Sticks and MORE

Bid online at Easy Live Auction (fees apply).

Box fresh!

Vintage Anglepoise lamp and original box | H is for Home

We’ve had lots of these classic Herbert Terry Anglepoise lamps over the years, but we’ve never had a box fresh example before. In fact, we’ve never seen an original box until now.

Mint condition, vintage Anglepoise lamp | H is for Home

The earlier, stepped-base Anglepoise lamps have firm followers, but this early 1970s version also has devoted fans… and, along with the very similar 1960s Model 75, it’s probably our favourite shape. This site will show you the various Terry-designed Anglepoise lamps available to hunt out – or help you date your own vintage Anglepoise.

Box label of mint condition, vintage Anglepoise lamp | H is for Home

This Model 90 is available in a variety of colourways. As you can see from the packaging, it’s mushroom grey in this case.

Mint condition, vintage Anglepoise lamp | H is for Home

Some people like their vintage homewares with a bit of wear & tear – others prefer to search out pristine examples.

Name stamp on a vintage Anglepoise lamp | H is for Home

If you’re the latter, this could be the lamp for you… fully working, and hidden away for 40 years. We can’t guarantee it’s unused, but it certainly looks it!

vintage and antique homewares

Here’s a selection of this week’s homewares buys – they have a very antique feel to them, it has to be said.

19th century wooden child's armchair

We’ll start with the small chair. It’s a 19th century child’s low-back Windsor dating from about 1820. It’s a little tired and dusty, but will clean and wax beautifully. A great little buy!

Antique carved wooden bread board and spoon

We’re still in the 19th century with these two pieces of kitchenalia. First, a Victorian bread board…

…this one has lovely carved decoration around the rim – leaves… or possibly feathers.

Antique metal spice tin

And then a lidded metal spice tin dating from the same period.

It has compartments for the different flavourings. It would have been things like nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice and pepper in those days… but the world’s your oyster.

Antique wooden cash drawer

This old shop counter would make a wonderful kitchen piece itself. It has the original internal fittings which make fantastic spice drawers. The coin scoops for loose spices and the compartments for packets etc.

Green-painted wooden antique milking stool, Carltonware Princess money box and orange Anglepoise lamp

Just to prove we’ve not turned our back on the 1960s, we’ve got these two classic items from the period… an orange Herbert Terry Anglepoise lamp – and the Carltonware princess money box designed by Vivienne Brennan. Along with the small green stool (yes, you’ve guessed it – Victorian), they certainly add a splash of colour to the group.

As always, the items will be split between our web shop and antiques centre space. Drop us a line if you’ve got any questions about them.
