Auction alert: 20th Century Design sale

Burstow & Hewett – who are located in Battle, East Sussex – are holding their 20th Century Design sale on the 22^nd September 2022 from 10am.

We featured Burstow & Hewett earlier this year and here they are once again. They really do sell the best quality mid century modern furniture, homewares and accessories.

There’s a buyer’s premium and internet surcharge of 24% inc. VAT on top of the winning bid amount. Online bidding is also available via the EasyLiveAuction and The Saleroom websites. Check their websites for additional charges.

Lot 1502: HANS BATTRUD, a set of 6 Scandia bent wood dining chairs, height 93cm
Pitting to leg frames, some wear to rubber feet consistent with age and use, no labels.

Auction alert: Online 20th Century Retro Interior Design Auction

The upcoming Online 20^th Century Retro Interior Design Auction is being held by East Bristol Auctions. There will be 202 lots in the sale.

Quite a few of the lots have caught our eye; we’ve highlighted some below. There are some original mid-century modern items, in our experience, that will always be snapped up. Anglepoise lamps, Ladderax modular shelving and Whitefriars glass are all extremely popular.

A vintage pre war Anglepoise table / desk lamp light having a cream paint finish. Features a solid cast two tiered painted base ‘The Anglepoise – Made by Herbert Terry & Sons’ to the front of the fork. The original conical shade with cooling holes along the back. Fully extended measures approx; 92cm tall.

A retro mid 20^th Century Danish teak and wicker metamorphic sewing table having a single drop-leaf sliding top with single fitted drawer below with recessed handles. Below a wicker pull out basket section with all raised upon straight tapering supports. Measures approx; 64cm x 62cm x 43cm.

A vintage mid 20^th Century railway / industrial luggage trolley having tubular metal frame supported turned oak handles to each end. Slatted base with all raised on a iron base with iron wheels. A good example. Measures approx; 99cm x 94cm x 43cm.

Bertrand Balas for Raak of Amsterdam – Fountain / Springfontein Light – An original 1970s brushed aluminium hanging ceiling pendant light. The split shade effect forcing the light swirling up and being concentrated down at the same time. Measures approx; 33cm x 35cm diameter.

White & Newton – A retro 1960s teak wood two tier cocktail drinks / tea trolley having removable trays and a raised bar handle to one side, all supported by spindle legs and raised on castors. Applied makers plaque to the underside of the top tray. Measures approx; 76cm x 64cm x 44cm.

Whitefriars – A collection of three retro mid 20^th Century designer studio art glassware in ruby red to include a Knobbly bowl and a Bubble controlled example. Together with vase having a waited neck and boulbs body. No signs of visible damage. Vase measures approx; 23cm x 13cm diameter.

A retro late 20^th Century hanging basket chair / pendulum chair of wicker construction. The pierced egg shape form chair hanging from a metal hook atop the main support attaching to a metal stand. The stand terminating into a rounded tubular base. Measures approx; 183cm x 103cm.

Robert Heal – Staples – Ladderax – An original retro vintage 20^th Century teak wood modular three bay modular wall unit comprising of four white metal painted upright supports with a series of adjustable shelves, sliding door cupboard, full front bureau section and chest of three drawers all with brass supports. Measures approx; 163cm x 273cm x 36cm.

This wonderful Animal is now the property of Mr. John Day of Harmston, near Lincoln, and was March 20 1802, six years old. Subscriptions taken for this Print in the first Year, amounted to two thousand and upwards, from whence the Public opinion of this beautiful Animal may well be ascertained. This Ox is still in a growing and improving state, and weighs according to the computation of the best judges 30 Score pr. Quarter, which is 300 Stone 14 lb to the Stone’,

Charity Vintage: Ladderax storage unit

Ladderax, like its Dutch cousin Tomado, is the creme de la creme of Mid Century Modern shelving and storage. The Ladderax modular storage system was designed by Robert Heal and manufactured by Staples from the mid 1960s through to the mid 1980s.

This teak example and has wooden slatted rather the more familiar metal uprights. There are quite a few components here so you’ll be able to be rearranged into countless configurations to suit your space, need and taste.

I can just imagine this in someone’s tasteful home office with red 700 Series GPO telephone, stacks of interior and graphic design books, a display of Scandinavian art glass, all lit by a vintage Anglepoise or Maclamp.

If you’re interested in buying, it will need to be collected from the British Heart Foundation shop in Edinburgh, either by you or you can arrange for a courier to collect on your behalf. It’s starting price is an extremely reasonable £79.99 and there are currently no bids – but I don’t think it will remain like that for long!
