Disposable eco-barbecues | H is for Home

Hot bank holiday weekends are upon us! The forecast for the next week and more is rain free and lots of sunshine. Whenever this happens, supermarkets run out of salad, ice cream, ice cubes, ice lollies and… those instant barbecues. You know the ones; they consist of what looks like a large, tin foil takeaway container filled with coal and covered over with a metal mesh. People take them to the beach and other beauty spots and then, annoyingly, often leave them behind with all the other litter.

If you follow us on Twitter, you’ll probably know that litter is one of my bugbears. I had a look around on the internet for alternatives to these grill things and came across just three examples of disposable eco-barbecues. Unfortunately, number 3 is only available to buy if you purchase them wholesale – they don’t seem to be available in small quantities anywhere in the UK. If the likes of B&Q, Homebase, Wilko and the big supermarket chains began to stock them they’ll surely make a killing. They’re a much, much better option in our greener, single-use plastic aware times!

Win a bucket of Flamers with Certainly Wood & H is for Home

For this month’s competition, we have a fantastic prize that you’ll use all year round. We’ve teamed up with Certainly Wood to offer one of our readers a bucket of Flamers firelighters.

Small pile of flamers on their box | H is for Home

We’ve been trialling these Flamers recently and we can really sing their praises. They’re a wonderful product – renewable, untreated wood shavings dipped in refined wax. They have a long burn which makes lighting fires easy and reliable. Also, there’s none of the harsh, chemical aromas that you get from other types of firelighter.

Flamer igniting with kindling | H is for Home

And as if that wasn’t enough, they actually look great too. They’re attractive additions to the fireside in the same way a basket of logs gives a natural, cosy look to a room. In addition to wood burners and open fires, they’re also perfect for barbecues and pizza ovens. We’re complete converts and won’t be using anything else in the future.

What glorious weather we’ve been having – day after day of brilliant sunshine! It’s a bank holiday weekend, there’s only one thing for it BARBECUE!

If, like us, you only have a small garden or patio, bucket barbecues are a much more practical option than one of those super-duper barbecue grills. Much as we’d love one kitted out with quadruple gas burners, rotisserie, warming cupboard and instant ignition – we’d have no room for table and chairs… or us!

The Hema bucket barbecue (#1) is so affordable, we could buy two and have one each. One for Justin’s steak / burger / rack of ribs and the other for my vegetable skewers and veggie sausages. I’m not best keen on them being cooked side-by-side.

My favourite is the Fortnum & Mason eau de nil number. It’s not dissimilar to the budget Hema example and is almost 3 times the price. By way of justification, I really like the detailing of this one and the fact that you can lift the grill off by the handle – vital when my kebabs need rescuing quickly from certain cremation! Oh, and call me shallow… but I do love the classic F&M logo too.

What’s your favourite barbecue food?

  1. Bucket barbecue: £15, Hema
  2. Gentleman’s Hardware barbecue bucket – black: £26.91, Amazon
  3. BBQ bucket in Eau de Nil: £40, Fortnum & Mason

We’ve had a few false starts, but the al fresco dining season must surely be just around the corner! One of the best smells of summer is the waft of BBQ smoke in the air.

There’s something about long, warm, sunny days that makes you want to dust off the BBQ, put the bottles in an ice-filled cooler and get out into the garden with friends. It’s a really enjoyable, sociable way to spend some time!
