Charity Vintage: 1950s wicker chairs

pair of vintage 1950s wicker chairs for sale on eBay for Charity by & in support of East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH)

We love this pair of beauties! Beautiful, sculptural, minimal. We have a soft spot for vintage wicker homewares and have bought & sold a fair number of wicker chairs, footstools, baskets, sewing boxes etc in our time. Wicker may seem like something of a ‘country house’ material, but it also looks at home in a modernist city pad.

These wicker chairs are currently for sale by & in support of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices*. The starting bid is £50 but you can also buy them now for £150. They’re buyer to collect from Thetford in Norfolk.

*East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. They provide care and support wherever the family wishes in families’ own homes, in hospital or at one of their hospices in Ipswich, Milton and Quidenham.

We love these orange stacking chairs for sale by & in support of Arch Stepping Stones Appeal*. They’re currently an unbelievable £1.04 for the job lot of 17 chairs.

You could have 6 dining chairs, 2 bedroom chairs and a set of 4 garden chairs – and still have some leftovers! If you’re anywhere near or willing to drive to Stoke-on-Trent then grab yourself a bargain!

*All monies raised as a result of selling items on eBay will go towards the work that Arch Stepping Stones Appeal does with children and young people who are the ‘forgotten victims of domestic violence’ across Staffordshire and Cheshire. With your help and support they can make a difference by putting a smile back on the faces of our children and young people and help create a bright and safe future for them all.

4 teak chair carcasses

This set of chairs has been sitting in storage for some time awaiting a bit of TLC!

We’ve been taking advantage of the lovely weather to do a series of ‘doing up’ jobs in the garden.

The wood needed bringing back to life and the seat covers desperately needed replacing.

We decided to use some of this lovely vintage blue fabric dating from the 1960s – a perfect age match. It was part of our mammoth fabric haul  from a few years ago.

Adelle set about the upholstery whilst Justin treated the wooden frames.

We’re very happy with the results – the chairs are now ready for some mid century modern dining action!

The wood has come up beautifully – a rich, teak colour with fabulous grain. And we love the striking electric blue to contrast.

We’ve just put them in the antiques centre. They obviously take up quite a bit of space so we’ve priced them to sell. If you can pick up from West Yorkshire they’re available at £75  for the set of four!

Classic Reproductions

We love mid-century modern furniture here at H is for Home. The classic designs of the era can be incorporated into any furnishing scheme. Pieces can look equally good in a contemporary minimalist space or rustic barn conversion. Our only advice would be to give them a little room to breathe and be admired.

If you decide mid-century modern is for you, there’s another decision to make – whether to buy original vintage pieces from the 1950s & 60s or go for modern classic reproductions.

We’ve put together a  little montage of classic mid-century pieces – the modern reproductions alongside images of these design icons in original advertisements, photo shoots, magazines & film sets.

Good quality reproductions will provide you with the look you desire at a fraction of the price of a vintage original.

Availability is also guaranteed – sourcing original pieces in good condition can be a very time-consuming process.

Whilst some people insist on the authenticity and history of the original, the aged look or indeed pre-owned isn’t everyone’s cup of tea either. Many people like new items for their home to actually be new and look absolutely pristine.

We’re big fans of vintage, but modern reproductions can also be the perfect solution in some situations too.
