Tennis sets

They come under a variety of names – tennis sets, TV sets, cup & tray sets – basically they’re a combined drinking vessel and plate ensemble. One item to carry instead of two. They’re so handy! Perfect for both indoor & outdoor snacking – think coffee & croissant, tea & cake, milk & cookies – the possibilities are endless.

You can pick up so many fabulous designs & patterns. You’ll find lots of vintage 1950s/60s examples – and there are contemporary versions too. Here are three that caught our eye during our online trawl.

Kaipiainen cup & saucer

Vintage Birger Kaipiainen cup & saucer

We’ve nominated this cup & saucer as the week’s favourite buy. It wasn’t particularly cheap so it didn’t get the nomination because it was a great bargain. Just simply because we absolutely love the pattern… and its extra large size which makes it perfect for a café latte or hot chocolate.

You don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce who designed it, as the name is clearly incorporated into the pattern of stylised figures on the side.

It’s the work of Birger Kaipiainen (1915-1988) who worked at Arabia Pottery of Finland for nearly 50 years.

He became an honorary professor in 1977 and was referred to as both the King of Decorators and Prince of Ceramics by contemporaries.

Despite stretching the budget for a cup & saucer, we certainly weren’t going to leave this fabulous example of vintage Scandinavian ceramics behind!

J & G Meakin "Applewood" coffee pot and cup & saucer set

We picked up some of this fabulous vintage crockery this week. It’s one of our favourite designs with the sylised leaves & sliced apples.

It’s only a part set, but that doesn’t really matter. We can either sell it as individual items or put it into our store cupboard to wait for the other pieces to complete the set. We’ve got lots of odd pieces waiting to make into sets!!!

It’s the J & G Meakin Applewood pattern produced in the 1960s – isn’t it gorgeous?!
