Buying a modern acrylic desk: Knowing your options

Have you decided to give your home a makeover? Thinking about incorporating that modern acrylic desk you’ve seen in interior design magazines into your project? Well, that’s an interesting idea! Not only can this piece of furniture make your room look more spacious, but it can also help create that feeling of being ‘in the now’ with its modern and sleek design.

Now, let’s explore all the different options that are available in the market today. This way, you can make an informed decision and choose the one that best suits your needs.

9 popular types of acrylic desks and their uses

When you shop for acrylic desks, you’ll find an endless variety of designs, colours and sizes. To help you find the perfect piece for your home improvement project, you should familiarise yourself with the most popular pieces and how to use them.

1. Acrylic desk with drawers

This type of modern acrylic desk is perfect for small spaces. It usually comes with two or three drawers that can be used to store documents and other office supplies.

An acrylic desk with drawers is a good option when you’re creating a home office or revamping an existing one. It can be seen as an upgrade from the traditional wooden desk since it takes up less space and has a more modern look. If you want to give your home office a makeover but don’t have the budget for a complete renovation, then this is the perfect solution!

Apart from an office, this type of desk is also perfect for kids’ rooms because it can help keep the area tidy. The drawers can be used to store toys, clothes or school stuff.

2. Clear acrylic writing desk

As the name suggests, this sleek desk is made for the purpose of writing. It’s also perfect for compact spaces because it’s transparent and doesn’t take up much room. If you live in a studio apartment or have a small home office, then this would be an ideal piece of furniture for you.

With its simple design, a clear acrylic writing desk can also serve other purposes. For example, you can instead use it as an end table in your living room or as a bedside table in your bedroom. Or, you could use it as an accent table where you can place a vase of flowers and some framed photos.

The only downside of this type of desk is that it doesn’t have any storage compartment. But if you don’t need to store anything, then this shouldn’t be a problem.

3. White acrylic desk

While the first thing that comes to mind when people hear the term “acrylic” is its clear character; however, acrylic furniture can also be coloured and/or opaque.

A white acrylic desk is perfect for those who want to create a minimalist space. It can also be used to achieve the Scandinavian aesthetic that’s so popular these days.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that white furniture can show dust, dirt and fingerprints more easily than other colours. So, if you have kids or pets at home, then you might want to consider another colour option.

4. Waterfall acrylic desk table

This type of modern acrylic desk gets its name from its waterfall-like design. The desktop is usually made from a single piece of acrylic that’s curved at the edges to create a smooth and seamless look.

A waterfall acrylic desk table is perfect for those who want to create a minimalistic and stylish space. It can be used as an accent table in your living room or bedroom. If you’re looking for something unique, then this is the perfect option for you!

5. Clear acrylic computer desk

Are you in the process of creating a workstation? Or, do you have a gamer in the family or someone who is always on their computer? If you said “yes” to all of these questions, then a clear acrylic computer desk is the best way to make your space a lot more interesting and pleasing to be in.

This type of desk comes with the essential features that you’d need for a computer set up. It usually has a keyboard tray, CPU stand and plenty of space for monitors and other peripherals.

The great thing about a clear acrylic computer desk is that it gives the illusion that your PC set-up is floating in mid-air! It would definitely be a conversation starter with anyone who sees it.

6. Polygonal acrylic clear desk

This is a piece of furniture that will surely create a more unique look in your home. Usually having a triangular or hexagonal shape, it will be a perfect piece to add a touch of quirkiness to your space.

Though, when decorating with this furniture, ensure that it doesn’t clash with the shapes of the existing furniture in your space. For example, if you have a lot of square or rectangular furniture, then this may not be the best option for you.

Nevertheless, if you’re looking for something different and unique, then a polygonal acrylic clear desk is definitely worth considering!

7. Acrylic desk with trestle legs

Depending on the construction, the legs of this desk are made from acrylic or metal pipes that are arranged in a trestle or ‘sawhorse’ formation. Its unique design will add a touch of industrial chic to your space.

The great thing about this type of furniture is that it can be used as both a desk and a table. For example, you could use it as a dining table in your kitchen or as a centre table in your living room.

8. Mirrored storage desk

This is a great option if you’re looking to replace your old dresser or vanity unit in your bedroom to achieve a glamorous look. Typically, this type of desk has a large mirror attached to the top surface. It also comes with plenty of storage space underneath for all your make-up, hair products and other accessories.

When choosing the design of your mirrored storage desk, you should consider the overall style of your bedroom. For example, if you have a modern and minimalist space, then you might want to choose a desk with clean lines and a simple design. But if you are going for a more luxurious look, then you could opt for one that has a more elaborate design with ornate details.

9. Acrylic/wood desk

Not all clear-design furniture pieces are made solely from acrylic. Some are also made from a combination of different materials such as a mix of acrylic and wood. This type of modern acrylic desk is a great option if you’re looking for something that has both a stylish and natural design.

The wood usually makes up the frame and legs of the desk, while the top surface is made from clear acrylic. Or, it can be vice versa. This creates a very interesting contrast between the two materials that are sure to make your desk stand out from the rest.

As you can see, there are a plethora of modern acrylic desks to choose from. In our case, we found an acrylic desk here that we think perfectly fits a home office. If you take the time to explore all your options, you’ll surely find the perfect piece for your home makeover project!

How to save on your new acrylic desks

A modern acrylic desk can be quite expensive to buy, with prices even reaching up to $9,000. Fortunately for you, there are some ways how you can save on your purchase.

For starters, you could look for furniture stores that offer discounts and promotions. Some shops have sales a few times a year where you can enjoy big-time price cuts on selected items.

Another way to save on an acrylic desk is to buy used furniture. Acrylic furniture is very popular right now, so it’s likely that you’ll be able to find one at a fraction of the price if you’re willing to buy it second-hand. Just make sure that the piece is still in good condition and doesn’t have any cracks or scratches.

Of course, you can always try negotiating with the salesperson. If you think that the price is too high, then you can always try haggling to see if you can get a better deal. Some stores would be willing to negotiate, especially if they know that you’re a potential serious buyer.

Decorating with acrylic furniture: tips to achieve stunning results

The secret to decorating with modern acrylic desks and achieving stunning results is to use them as accent pieces. This means that you should not use them as the main focal point of the room but rather as an addition that will help bring everything together. When used correctly, these desks can add a touch of uniqueness and sophistication to any room.

Another way to make acrylic furniture work in any space is to pair them with other pieces that have similar colours and shapes. For instance, if you have an acrylic desk in your home office, you can pair it with an acrylic chair or even an acrylic lamp. By doing this, you will create a cohesive look.

Finally, when decorating with acrylic furniture, make sure to keep the rest of the room simple. This means avoiding patterns and busy designs as they can make the space still appear cluttered and overwhelming. Instead, opt for solid colours and clean lines.

There are many different ways that you can use a modern acrylic desk in your home. Whether you want to create a stylish office or simply add an elegant touch to any room, these tips will help you achieve the perfect results.

We often feature compact homes here on our blog, and today we’re sharing another one. Alexandra Elisa’s Berlin home is a mere 85sq metres. However, the limited space is so well utilised, none of the rooms look cramped or cluttered.

Take, for example, this desk space that she has photographed at different times, in the various seasons. It has HUGE windows and is dual-aspect – flooding the corner with natural sunlight, so it’s the ideal spot for her to sit and do her artwork.

The majority of the walls are painted white or cream, which gives a calm, easy flow to the home. The footprint of the apartment may be small, but the ceilings are high. Alexandra Elisa makes full use of this vertical space with her lighting, storage and decorative choices. Go check out her ingenious shoe storage/display solution!

Will standing desks ever replace chairs?

Will standing desks ever replace chairs? | H is for Home

As health and wellness become more important in offices around the world, standing desks are taking over for the many health benefits that they can have for those using them. Working at a sit-to-stand desk rather than a traditional desk and chair can reduce pain and stiffness, boost energy, and even help workers lose weight. And, the benefits for organisations are also huge, with offices that made the switch to standing desks reporting better productivity and teamwork. So, will standing desks ever replace chairs? Here are some reasons why they’re becoming more and more popular.

Sitting is really bad for your health

There’s a good reason why sitting is often referred to as the new smoking; sitting down for hours is simply terrible for your body. And, office workers who sit for at least eight hours a day have to deal with a 15% increase in their risk of premature death – if you’re sitting for 11 hours, that number jumps up to 40%!

Sitting at a desk means that you’re inactive, even if you type fast. And according to the BBC, inactivity leads to 3.5 million deaths every year; a statistic of which you probably don’t want to become a part. Sitting is also linked to an increased risk of several diseases including breast and colon cancer and diabetes. You’re also at a greater risk of developing kidney disease, heart disease and high blood pressure if you’re spending most of your day sitting down.

Standing promotes better health

While sitting is not doing very well when it comes to what’s good for your health and prolonging your life, standing is the complete opposite. In fact, standing is clinically proven to improve your health, reduce your risk of disease and premature death and helps to increase physical activity. Indeed, time spent standing up has even been proven to be better at reducing some of the risks associated with sitting compared to doing an hour of exercise. Improve your health and prolong your life starting today with these height adjustable standing desks from friskadesk.com. FRISKA is a Scandinavian style furniture brand with a range of modern, sleek desks to choose from perfect for the workplace or home office. They make functional products with your health and well-being a priority.

Sitting can be painful

If you’ve worked sitting at a desk for any length of time, then you’ll know that after a while, it can get really painful. When you’re sitting down, there’s up to 90% more pressure applied to your lower back compared to standing, and sitting for extended periods of time can lead to disk damage and reduced flexibility in your spine. And if your desk, keyboard and monitor height aren’t optimal for good posture and you’re using a regular chair rather than an ergonomic one, you might be craning your neck and hunching your shoulders too, which can lead to pain and headaches from muscle overextension.

Standing reduces back pain

Back pain is a common complaint in offices; a big cause of it is sitting down all day. But on the other hand, standing periodically throughout the day can dramatically reduce any back pain that you experience. And, some research conducted on standing desks found that users also suffered from fewer headaches. However, while switching to an adjustable sit-stand desk is a great way to reduce some of the pain caused by sitting down for hours, if you work at a desk, it’s important to make sure that your desk, monitor and keyboard height are right for you. It’s also worth investing in an anti-fatigue mat, and alternate frequently between sitting and standing so you don’t end up with new aches and pains from standing up using a computer for too long.

Sitting can lead to weight gain

Sitting is definitely not good for your waistline. In fact, obese people tend to sit for around two and a half hours more per day than people who are at an ideal weight. After sitting for just one hour, the production of Lipoprotein Lipase, a fat-burning enzyme, can decrease by as much as 90%. On the other hand, alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day can help you lose weight. When you go from sitting to standing, your heart actually beats ten times more per minute; if you stand for three hours per day, five days a week, you’ll burn around an extra 8lbs per year – that’s more than half a stone!

Healthy employees tend to be happy and more productive employees and so far, all the research around sitting is not looking good for your health and well-being. Along with the physical health benefits, using a standing desk can also engage your muscles to pump fresh blood to your brain, improving your mood and boosting creativity.

A window desk can be an inspiring, relaxing and interesting place to work. I always prefer a view of a garden or a street rather than a solid wall.

Didn’t Catherine score a belter with that 1950s desk? She saw it advertised on her local Emmaus Facebook page and grabbed it first thing the following morning. I’d do that too – it’s so unusual with that side file storage… look at those lovely legs, too!
