Price Points: Garden diaries

Garden diaries

We’ll have been living in our cottage in Wales for two years in early August, and we’re still making little changes and updates to the lovely garden that we inherited.

We’ve had a few successes and a few failures; the latter have mainly been down to the local wildlife helping themselves to our edible crops! Furthermore, we’re getting our heads round what’s planted where, what works, what doesn’t work and what new projects we’d like to try out next year.

I’d like to start jotting down all the garden ideas we have – my memory needs a bit of help these days. What I’ve been doing a lot recently is scrolling through our Instagram feed to see what was at its peak and when. I’ve noticed that things are a full month behind where they were this time last year; the roses, the veg seedlings, the foliage on the trees… We don’t post that many images to our Instagram feed – on average, one per day – but it can take AGES to get to photos posted a year ago.

Anyway, back to jotting down ideas – one of these garden diaries would be just the thing. I’d want one that’s not just for edibles. For example, we have a great selection of roses that I’d like to record details about – names & descriptions, locations in the garden, flowering times etc.

The printables option seems like the best bet for us. I can pick & choose the pages that are relevant and print those out as and when they’re needed, in the quantities I need.

Price Points: Bullet journals

Choice of three Bullet journals | H is for Home

When I was a pre-teen, I used to collect stickers, pretty writing paper, pens & pencils, erasers (especially the sweet-smelly ones!) and anything stationery-related.

In my teens, I flirted with keeping a diary – but with two, very nosey younger sisters, that was always going to end in disaster!

As a young adult / twenty-something, I was a Filofax fanatic. I had all the inserts & accessories and my day-to-day life couldn’t run properly without it. This was an era long before the internet and smart-phones with calendars, alarms and alerts were even invented.

Thus, I’m the perfect candidate for keeping a bullet journal (or ‘BuJo’ to the initiated). I realise that I’m a few years behind the times – it was first shared back in 2013 – but better late than never! I’ve been reading up about them and there are lots & lots of inspirational bullet journalers out there. These are a few I’ve found:

The only obstacle is the fact that I’m a left-hander; fellow lefties will know just what I’m on about. Trying to write in notebooks, diaries… even cheque books (remember those?!) etc is a challenge. Trying not to smudge the ink you’ve just written takes a lot of effort! There are, however, special journals for left-handers and ones that open flat.

I think a bullet journal is just the thing to get my life in order in 2019!

For the list-makers, the note-takers, the Post-It pilots, the track-keepers, and the dabbling doodlers. It’s an analogue system for the digital age that will help you track the past, organise the present, and plan for the future

Christmas gifts of the day: 2017 calendars

Selection of 2017 calendars | H is for Home

Whether you need a little desk calendar just for your own work appointments or a jumbo wall calendar for all the family to jot down all their activities we’ve found some 2017 calendars for you!

We keep our calendar just inside our front door on a thin bit of wall above where we hang our keys. We tend to choose ones with flora or fauna illustrations by indie artists such as this one we had a few years ago by Gail Kelly.

We’re just off to order ourselves the Matt Sewell birds calendar – we already have some of his illustrated books – and this will be just the right fit for our narrow little space!

2015 is almost gone – just a fortnight’s worth of sand left in the timer. I don’t know about you, but with the proliferation of tech gadgets and apps around, I still like having the physicality of pen & paper to record certain things.

Every year, I carry over everyone’s birthdays from the previous year’s diary to the following year’s. I love to flip through the pages to remind myself of what I’d been up to during the prior 12 months. The work I had on, the deadlines that I had to meet, the weekends away, the people who came to visit…

I’ve been searching for a bright one for next year – orange being my favoured colour. Here’s what I came up with for 2016 diaries – budget, mid-range and deluxe.

  1. Panama collection orange 2016 Portobello diary in cross-grain lambskin: £180, Smythson
  2. ‘Colour a Month’ daily planner: £31.99, Moleskine
  3. Letts Two Tone A5 week to view diary: £9.49, Filofax
