How to organise your kitchen

How to organise your kitchen

A well-organised kitchen is an essential part of any functioning household. If there’s chaos in the kitchen, you can face an almost unlimited list of potential problems. You spend so much time there and, since food is at the heart of any home, you must take care to ensure you organise your kitchen well.

Kitchen plan

The room

How to layout a kitchen is the most critical decision you can make with the room. For example, should you keep the kitchen table in the kitchen or have it as a dedicated food preparation area? It’s essentially dependant on size and available space; if it’s large, it’s nice to be in the actual kitchen, as the cook can quickly move back and forward for serving purposes. If you have the time and budget, consider renovating the kitchen to make it more as you’d like.

Storage containers on pantry shelves

Shelves & racking

Storage is key to a functioning kitchen; if we have clutter all over the worktops and the table, it will never work. Shelves work better in the kitchen than in any other room in the house. Why is this? Well, items in a kitchen are more often used than elsewhere; consider how often we use each of our books compared to pots, pans and utensils. If we have ample pantry space, it’s advisable to put up shelves or racking in there.

Mouldy cheese

Food rotation

One thing that can throw a kitchen, and therefore your life, into chaos is poor food rotation. It’s the height of frustration to plan a meal, set up your prep area only to discover that one or more of the ingredients is out of date or going off. To prevent this, you must remain vigilant with your stock; treat it as if you were running your own mini supermarket. No less than weekly, you should check all cupboards, fridges and freezers, especially your long-life ingredients, as these are the ones that slip under the radar and go bad without you realising it.

Wind up kitchen timer

Time management

We hear many of our friends & family groan when we mention the fact that we still keep a paper calendar in our kitchen, but we still swear by this method of self-organisation, and we can make it a bit personal to us; check out this great Irish calendar as an example. It’s also essential to time your cooking and baking accurately, and there are several ways of achieving this. A simple kitchen clock, either wall-mounted or on your stove, will work. There are various types of dedicated kitchen timers on the market as well. But the method we like to use best is using a smart speaker; the advantage being that hands are often messy and sticky when cooking, and using a voice-activated device seems perfect.

Kitchen scales

Weights & measures

We also ensure that we have a good solid set of measuring spoons, cups and jugs handy, as well as accurate manual or digital kitchen scales large enough for use with mixing bowls, pots and pans.

5 easy and affordable kitchen upgrades to consider

5 easy and affordable kitchen upgrades to consider

Many families spend significant portions of their day in the kitchen because it’s the room that’s the epicentre of a home. It’s where we eat, prepare meals or discuss our day over a cup of tea or coffee. With open floor plan living becoming ever more popular, it’s safe to say that kitchens have become the new place for the modern family to congregate. Thus, the importance of a clean, functional and visually appealing kitchen has grown even more.

If it feels outdated, read on to discover five easy and affordable kitchen upgrades that will transform it into your favourite place to spend time.

Accent kitchen wall

1.    Add an accent wall

An accent wall is an affordable interior design feature that can improve the aesthetics of a space. If you find that your kitchen lacks a focal point, installing an accent wall is an excellent idea. You’ll immediately notice a difference in your perception of the space because an accent wall can quickly and completely change how a place looks and feels. Explore kitchen accent wall ideas and find the best style for your home.

Kitchen lighting

2.    Improve lighting

An easy kitchen upgrade to consider is the lighting. Your light fixtures might be outdated and modern examples can generally be inexpensive. Find chic light fixtures that match the décor of your kitchen. Consider adding multiple pendants to ensure all the important areas in your kitchen are illuminated sufficiently. The worktop, island and sink should receive plenty of light. If you want to create a cosy ambiance in your kitchen, install tiny string lights under your upper cabinets.

Kitchen cabinets painted green

3.    Paint the cabinets

When considering kitchen upgrades, your cabinets deserve your utmost attention because the styles and designs tend to become outdated over time. Since replacing cabinets can be costly and time-consuming, painting them is a much better idea. Adding a fresh coat of paint to your cabinets can make them look like new. Use a warm paint colour if you want to brighten up the space. However, if the colour palette in your kitchen is predominantly warm, consider painting the cabinets a bold and vibrant hue for better contrast.

Hanging pan rack

4.    Invest in kitchen organisation tools

Kitchens can easily begin to look cluttered. With so many appliances, utensils and cookware sets, keeping things orderly can be challenging. However, a well-organised kitchen looks more inviting and allows for better usability. If you have limited storage space, consider purchasing fittings and accessories for better organisation. For example, a ceiling-hung pan rack can help you store your cookware more intuitively. Instead of cramming dry goods such as rice, pasta and cereals into cupboards or leaving them in their plastic bags on the counter, decant and keep the contents in attractive storage tins and jars.

Cast iron kitchen handle and knob

5.    Replace the hardware

Something as simple as switching old handles and knobs can significantly change the look of your kitchen. Due to intensive use, these fittings can begin to show their age quickly, so consider an upgrade. Sleek, clean handles & knobs can make old cabinets and other pieces of furniture look more modern and refined. Plus, they’re quick & easy to change.

Make use of the tips above to improve the functionality and aesthetics of your kitchen.

This week, I’ve had to embed a pair of Instagram photos so you get a wider view of Hannah’s fab olive green kitchen. Olive green has long been a favourite colour of ours – so much so it’s in our H is for Home logo & branding!

The room isn’t just eye candy either, it’s really practical & usable. A lot of thought has obviously gone into its design. We often repeat the adage on here, “A place for everything, and everything in its place”.

The DIY painted shelf stores all the drinking vessels together; they’re to hand but, at the same time, up and out of the way of the worktops. The mugs – which Hannah sourced on her world travels – are just where she needs them most, right above the coffee machine and water carbonator.

There’s more shelving (you can never have too much shelving in the kitchen, in my opinion!), this time housing the wine rack, bread bin and cook book collection.

I’m a little in love with that matte olive green articulated wall lamp. Again, it’s just where it’s needed, above the workspace with the kitchen knives and chopping boards – task lighting at its finest.
