What’s not to love about this retro pastel kitchen diner? The sugared almond colours bring the space to life. Although candy pink is the dominant colour, the addition of chalky lemon, mint and white prevent it looking overly ‘girly’.

At first glance, the classic, mid-century look appears as though it would have been very expensive to achieve. With a bit of time, creativity and planning, you can create a lovely interior like this for less than you think.

The dining chairs are from Homebase and cost £100 per pair. A single Ercol Originals dining chair is over £300. Similarly, the Tulip table is a replica, a Knoll original will set you back almost $6,000.

3 ways to update your kitchen

3 ways to update your kitchen

When it comes to improving your kitchen, it can be easy to get into the rut of renovating your whole kitchen yet upgrading certain aspects can make a massive difference. If you’re looking to update your kitchen without the hefty price tag then changing up three areas can transform the look and atmosphere whilst continuing to be practical.

Kitchen with coffee machine and grinder on the countertop

Adding a coffee machine

It can be surprising how adding a coffee machine to your kitchen can improve the overall look as well as improving your mood. The joy a cup of coffee can bring at the start of your day can become a pleasurable part of your morning routine. Having coffee subscriptions is a good way to take the weight off your shoulders by having the reassurance of having your coffee delivered to you to avoid occasions where you run out. You can save a lot of money by having a coffee subscription as the cost per cup is less than buying your habitual coffees each day from a café. The fresh coffee beans at home are as tasty, if not better, than the ones used in the coffee shop.

There are loads of different coffee machine designs that you can get to complement your interior design such as various colours and sizes to fit the space. If you’re a serious coffee lover then you might want to find one with an integral milk frother and grinder.

Glossy yellow & grey kitchen units

Updating the kitchen units

Are you getting bored of your units looking outdated and unloved? If you are, there are several ways in which you can update them without having to replace everything. Painting your units with a satin paint as it is a wipeable surface whilst giving that professional look. If you’re in a situation where you cannot paint your kitchen cabinets then you can adhere a sticky vinyl sheet which you can peel off when needed without damaging the original door finish. For larger budgets, you remove your current doors and invest in new door types as then you won’t need to replace the entire carcass.

Changing the floor and lighting

Often, people don’t think to change their floors as it’s not something you look at in the kitchen but it can make a difference to the overall atmosphere of the room. Avoid carpets in the kitchen as this can be really unhygienic if food falls onto the floor. Opt for wood, tiles or laminate as these are easy to wipe clean and look professional in every style of kitchen. Pay attention to whether your floor can withstand spillages, as some can warp or allow liquid to run down the cracks causing it to discolour and show wear faster than others.

Another part of the kitchen people often overlook is lighting. However, having good illumination can show off the best bits of the room such as having spotlights under the cabinets shining onto the worktops. Having an odd number of hanging lights above the breakfast bar is a great way to make it a feature and a talking point as soon as your guests enter the space.

I lived in Brighton for about a decade, however, it wasn’t until I’d been in the city for about 8 years that I visited the Pavilion. When I saw a photograph of this Regency-inspired kitchen, I was immediately taken back.

The Great Kitchen in the Brighton Pavilion is the most awe-inspiring room I’ve ever been in – and the kitchen in Cranstone House shows that it’s possible to recreate the royal 19th century look to suit 21st century life.

Antique copper dominates the room, bouncing a warm glow around the space. The whopping American fridge and matching range cooker shows that mod cons and antiques can work together seamlessly.

The recently laid herringbone red brick floor looks like it has been down for hundreds of years, and the beautiful white marble wall tiles set off the blue-green painted walls.

To each their own. I’ve been posting photos of our new coffee station on our personal Instagram stream recently. Mo has created for himself a metallic tea station; his copper Dualit kettle and toaster are complemented by brass kitchen utensils and a collection of wooden chopping boards (the latter he claims are for display purposes only!).

Go check out the rest of his squares… I’ve never seen so many lush and healthy looking houseplants in my life! Oh… and he has a beautiful, bright orange kitchen island!
