Designer Desire: James McIntosh Patrick

Born in Scotland, James McIntosh Patrick (1907-1998) was an etcher, fine art painter, printmaker and educator.

From 1924, he attended the world-renowned Glasgow School of Art during which time he won many prizes and gained a scholarship. His meticulous landscape etchings caught the attention of a London print dealer, and in 1928 he received an important commission for editions of prints. With the collapse of the print market during the Great Depression, Patrick turned to oil painting, but his attention to detail in landscape remained his trademark.

From 1928, he showed at the Royal Acadamy and from 1934 at Fine Art Society. He was elected to the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (the RSA) in 1957. He taught part-time at Dundee College of Art.

During WWII, Patrick served in the Camouflage Corps. Post-war was when he became famous for his intricate, realistic landscapes – especially of the area around his home town of Dundee.

Key solo exhibitions were held in 1967 at Dundee City Art Gallery and at Dundee, Aberdeen and Liverpool in 1987. A decade later, a 90th birthday celebration was held at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.

Patrick’s work is held in the collections of Dundee Art Galleries, Fleming Collection, Walker Art Gallery and Manchester Art Gallery amongst others.

As well as fine art landscape and portrait paintings in oils and watercolour, Patrick designed a number of publicity posters for British Railways of numerous Scottish tourist destinations including Crieff, Dunnottar Castle, Edinburgh, Loch Leven, Oban and St Andrews.

Easel in the Field: the Life of Mcintosh Patrick is available at Abe Books and Amazon. As well as the book, an auction sale catalogue was published in 1998 – Christie’s: The James McIntosh Patrick Collection – it accompanied a sale of personal effects furniture and artworks (his own and those of other artists) from his own collection.

Designer Desire: Natasha Newton

Montage of Natasha Newton artworks

I love these paintings by Natasha Newton; the fields of fluffy sheep, flock of birds above and little white-washed house with its smoking chimney sitting in the landscape on its own reminds me of our home.

Her mixed media artworks are a little bit folk art and are very, very charming. She sells original paintings, prints, greeting cards and postcards. Sign up to her mailing list to be among the first to hear of new works available.

The lightness of texture and touch in her acrylic and gouache paintings makes them look like they’re textile pieces.

She demonstrates her process and methods in the short film below…

John Knapp-Fisher (1931-2015) was a Pembrokeshire-based landscape painter. His subject matter often included boats, harbours and Welsh vernacular cottages.

He studied in Kent and lived in London before moving to West Wales in 1965 where, two years later, he opened his studio gallery in Croes-goch, on the main road out of St Davids.

Prints of his work are readily available from a number of outlets, including his own website, the Martin Tinney Gallery, Oriel Mimosa Gallery and Collectors Prints and also – on occasion – at auction.

His works are in the collections of the National Museum and Galleries of Wales, National Library of Wales, Swansea University and BBC Wales amongst others.

There are also a number of books available either about, or actually written by, Knapp-Fisher including John Knapp-Fisher’s Pembrokeshire, Pembrokeshire Churches and John Knapp-Fisher My Life – All the Little Things.

Designer Desire: Martin John Fowler

Montage of Martin John Fowler paintings

Martin John Fowler is a fine artist working in the Yorkshire/Lincolnshire borders. He travels recording the wild coastal areas from the Scottish isles to the hidden coves of Cornwall. He was born and raised in the mining towns of South Yorkshire. He studied drawing and painting at Doncaster College of Art. He went on to study painting and printmaking at Sheffield College of Art, acquiring a BA (hons) in Fine Art.

We first noticed his work while walking past the window of  Oriel y Bont in Aberystwyth town centre. We really love his paintings; they’re forged using bright, primary colours and are full of movement. Most of the paintings we’ve chosen to include in our montage come from Fowler’s The Prevailing Sense of Change series:

Drawing and painting working on my ongoing project intensified by the prevailing sense of change in Coastal working ports from childhood memories to the present which record and reflect the constant change and adaptions of an entire way of life. Recording in sketches and paintings

Head to Martin John Fowler’s Instagram feed to view a huge selection of his portfolio.
