How do you go about preparing for the imminent arrivals? Giving the house a top-to-toe deep clean, changing all the bedding and stocking up on extra food & drink will be the first things on our ‘to do’ list.

Luckily, we have a couple of spare bedrooms where people are accommodated and we like to make our guests’ stay as comfortable as possible.

A welcome basket filled with guest bedroom essentials is a thoughtful gesture that visitors will always appreciate and remember. Here are a few items you could include:

  • fluffy towels
  • bathrobe / dressing gown
  • bedroom slippers
  • toothbrush & toothpaste
  • soap
  • moisturiser
  • eye mask
  • ear plugs
  • pain killers

This Zeller bamboo basket from Wayfair is the perfect way to attractively hold and display the various items that you’ve chosen for your welcome pack.

You could also consider books, magazines and reading material relating to the house or local area. Place a vase of pretty, fragrant flowers on the windowsill. Leave a glass & carafe of water, box of tissues and a note with your wifi network password on the bedside table.

Price Points: Overnight bags

Selection of overnight bags | H is for Home

We’re off to visit some friends in the Lakes soon. We’re only going for a weekend, but we’re really looking forward to revisiting one of our favourite places… and favourite friends!

We have a massive duffel bag on wheels that holds about a 2 weeks’ holiday worth of clothes, shoes and toiletries. However, we could really do with something smaller like a couple of overnight bags. Something that doesn’t encroach upon the dog’s domain in the back of our estate car. He travels heavier than we do – he has his bed, blanket, 2 food bowls, travel-size bag of food, towel, raincoat, lead and – unfortunately in his old age – prescription medicines. He needs so much paraphernalia, it’s like having a toddler!

  1. UU Family travel tote: from $45.66 USD, AliExpress
  2. Hand-crafted yellow overnight bag by Freeload Leather Accessories: £255, Notonthehighstreet
  3. ASPINAL OF LONDON Harrison leather overnight business bag: £695, Selfridges

Price Points: Emergency overnight kits

Emergency overnight kits | H is for Home

Unfortunately, Justin’s mum had a stroke recently so we’ve been doing lots of hospital visiting during the past fortnight. It’s at unexpected times like this that emergency overnight kits seem like a very wise precaution.

Whether you’re grabbing it yourself or asking a relative or friend to pick it up for you, it can be a godsend. No scrabbling about at short notice – or in unfamiliar surroundings if someone’s doing it for you. They’re perfect for hospital stays – or hastily arranged short breaks or business trips.

My basic kit would contain pyjamas, undergarments, tent mules, toothbrush & toothpaste, soap, deodorant, reading glasses and hair bands.  What would go into your overnight emergency kit?

  1. Travel Essentials overnight emergency kit: Amazon (US)
  2. Vintage TWA airline overnight kit: £9.99, eBay
  3. Stow Away travel grooming kit by Men’s Society: £25, Notonthehighstreet
