It’s been a record-breaking hot, dry summer for the most part this year. Instagram is full of gorgeous images of outdoor spaces – and this decked clapboard patio is one of them.

It just shows that you don’t need a whole lot of room to create an outdoor space that is attractive and usable. The weathered wooden planks used on the ground, walls and overhead bring the whole area together. The matte metal accessories such as the storm lamp, hanging planter and bird cage give a utilitarian feel. The yellow painted rattan table & chairs are weather-resistant so can stay outdoors all year. It’s much easier just having to bring in the cushions and throw; even the reversible rug can stand up to the doubtless rainy days to come.

This Insta-square just sums up lazy, mid-summer garden vibes! How? The tropical-feel raffia tiki parasol. The festoon of al fresco lights draped above head height. The soft, fluffy floor cushions & rugs. The glowing and flickering tea lights, lanterns and hurricane lamps. They all come together to create quite a magical and cosy atmosphere. And not forgetting the beautiful, blue sky lingering until late in the evening. It looks like the perfect place to relax with family and friends.

Georgia Lindsay is the designer of this fantastic little oasis of an urban patio. Located in London, where space – and outside space – in particular is at a premium, this garden is a lesson in how to make the most of what you’ve got.

A tree has been planted so that it grows up through the wooden garden bench. It’s a magnolia which is slow growing and produces beautiful, showy, fragrant flowers. It really makes a statement!

Speaking of statement, we love the custom-made steel panels that act as a backdrop to the planting. Since being installed, it has weathered to an attractive rust colour.

The courtyard garden also incorporates a car parking space (not seen in these photos) – a precious commodity in Camden!

I truly identify with this home-owner. I remember helplessly trying to stop Fudge from walking roughshod our lovingly prepared allotment beds and seedlings. They have designed this attractive yet, at the same time, dog-friendly garden with damage limitation in mind.

There’s an obvious pathway – to keep spaniel, Coco on the straight and narrow.  They’ve sown robust plants that can stand up to being pushed past and trampled; bamboo, phormium (New Zealand flax) and yucca. They also add shape, drama and lend a tropical ambiance.

That giant outdoor Anglepoise is a real talking point – and extends the length of time you can spend outdoors to well into the night. Probably my favourite feature, is the stunning 1m2 porcelain tiles. Named ‘carpet for the garden’ they’re printed with what looks to be an antique Persian rug design. It really makes it feel like bringing the inside out!
