Aga-centric kitchencredit

One of the things I want in my forever home is an Aga or Rayburn range cooker. The owners of this very homely space in a Chelsea townhouse admit that they built the entire kitchen around their Aga.

The splash-back of subtle green tiles from Fired Earth works really well in showing off the shiny black beast to full effect. Similarly, the pale colours of the fitted kitchen and worktop help make the cooker even more of a focal point.

You’d think that white worktops in a kitchen would be really impractical. However, these are made of Silestone which is a quartz composite that’s non-porous, bacteriostatic and scratch & stain resistant.

And a show-stopping stove like this one needs a proper kettle bubbling away!

Vintage New World gas cooker 1430 series | H is for Home

Well, this is a first for us in the purchases department – a vintage gas cooker!

It was recently taken out of someone’s home who’d had it from new – and it was still being used. All the more remarkable as this model dates from the late 1930s! It was destined to be weighed in for scrap unless we saved it – and we just couldn’t let that be its fate.

It’s such a fabulous item. We love the design – solid and functional. It has oven, grill and hob. The top collapses down neatly when not in use to provide an additional work surface if required. And there’s a fold out plate warmer too. The entire body is covered in a warm, cream-coloured enamel. It’s very cute!

The condition is amazing considering its age and usage – it even has the original instruction card!

We found some original advertisements for this model New World gas cooker online. This example could easily go into some kind of living museum. However, as we said, it was still being used until recently, so could go straight back into a domestic setting.

Price Points: Non-white white goods

White goods are so… blah. Remember when computers were only available in grey or beige boxes? Then Apple came along with its curvy, candy-coloured iMacs – revolutionary!

A similar revolution is currently under way with kitchen appliances. It began with the smaller ones – kettles and toasters. Brands like Dualit began collaborating with other companies such as Liberty of London, Selfridges and Little Greene to produce special-edition toasters in the latter’s colours and patterns.

Now, it’s the turn of non-white white goods. Smeg began the march of colour with their fridge-freezers and others are joining in. Stoves, cooker hoods and washer-driers used to be large expanses of white, black or stainless steel. Appliances once were drab, now they’re being produced in a range of rainbow colours. Life’s too short to be lived in monochrome!
