Husman’s finds a home!

Vintage Husman's Potato Chips tin | H is for Home

We bought this extra large Husman’s potato chips tin at Thursday’s flea market. It’s made the long journey from Cincinnati, Ohio to Todmorden, West Yorkshire!

The fabulous colours caught our eye from a long way off.

As we got closer, we realised that it was a vintage tin with fabulous lettering and chirpy chip boy mascot! We reckon that it dates from the late 1960s era.

We love these branded wooden crates and tins. They’re very attractive and make for great up-cycled storage. And they also work really well as bedside or side tables.

It’s perfect sitting alongside a favourite chair – a place for books, reading glasses, a vase of flowers, glass of wine or hot cuppa. We’ve become very fond of it in a short space of time. We don’t know how it got to our little Pennine town from Cincinatti, but we’re glad it did!

Vintage recipe tin

We usually post recipes on a Thursday, but we’ll make an exception for this one.

Recipe for preserving children from a vintage recipe tin

We added this 1950s recipe tin to the H is for Home shop today. On the inside of the box is this charming “recipe for preserving children”. All very quaint and Famous Five-ish!

The tin itself is rather lovely with the utensil & ingredient design. It even has its original cards & dividers. Surely there must be space for a home-made ginger beer recipe, so that we can serve lashings of it to those excited, preserved children frolicking around the meadow on a hot summer day.

Charity Vintage: Carr biscuit tin

vintage Carr biscuit tin being sold on eBay for Charity by & in support of Isabel Hospice | H is for Home(ends 15 Apr, 2014 09:05:55 BST)

This vintage Carr biscuit tin is being sold on eBay for Charity by and in support of Isabel Hospice*. It looks as if it’s been through the wars. Lots of scratches and other wear and what looks to be a large, sticky black area on the top where there was once a label.

But it’s so pretty; such a lovely illustration… and it’s only £5! The good news is that rubbing it gently all over with a bit of Brasso wadding should get rid of much of the ancient dirt and sticky black stuff (this is one of our little restoration secrets!).

*Isabel Hospice is a charity needing to raise nearly £4 million per annum to provide their free services to the people of eastern Hertfordshire. Their ethos is that they treat the whole person, not simply the illness. They offer a complete hospice service through their team of Community Nurse Specialists, a 16-bed, in-patient hospice, a day hospice, outreach day hospices, hospice at home and a family support and bereavement service.
