Property spotlight: Colourful homes

56 Ambra Vale East, Cliftonwood BS8 4AH

What is it about properties on the coast being gay & bright? This week, we’re looking at colourful homes – all of which, purely by chance, are in coastal/harbour cities and towns; Aberaeron, Brighton and Bristol.

The first property is in Aberaeron, a Ceredigion town we visit regularly. It has a great fish & chip shop, the Harbourmaster is good for a place to stop for a coffee, pint or bite to eat and there are also a couple of ice cream shops… because that’s what you have on a day to the seaside!

The second is in Brighton – the city where we met and lived for a decade or so. The house we’ve chosen is in Hanover – on a street where we used to live – 28 doors down from the first property we bought together. It’s for sale at coming up for half a million pounds; I won’t go into what we bought and sold our little 2-bed house for back in 1998… but it was nowhere near that!

The third property is in arguably one of the most famous, colourful quarters in the country (only beaten by Notting Hill in London) – Bristol’s Cliftonwood.

This rainbow lounge just pops with colour wherever you look. The fuchsia, L-shaped sofa sits centre-stage – with an array of contrasting coloured & shaped cushions sitting atop.

All the soft furnishings are tactile and bright; from the yellow shaggy rug to the blue sheepskin footstool, and the striped throws to the chevron curtains.

A selection of potted plants dotted around the room add to the colourfulness, injecting a fresh, lime green zing.

You couldn’t help but have your spirits lifted when you walk into the room. Go check out the rest of Gill’s house, every room is equally bright, bold and cheery.

Price Points: Colour block furniture

Colour block furniture

Décor trends come, go and come back around again. Remember when magnolia walls were the thing? And then it was dark grey and nearly black. We reckon that bright colours are on the horizon, just waiting to be the in thing again.

After the years of austerity and the onset of Covid-19, we all need a bit of cheering up; we predict that colour block furniture is going to increase in popularity. Colour blocking is the practice of using contrasting colours side by side or diagonally against each other.

Colours that work best are the ones opposite each other on the colour wheel; lemon yellow and violet, lime green and magenta etc. You could even consider using just black and white and the shades in between for colour block décor.

Use colour block furniture in rooms with plain walls, ceilings and floors; busy, patterned wallpaper and rugs will over-stimulate the visual senses. If you don’t feel confident using something as large as a sofa, smaller objects such as cushions can introduce the look successfully.

Sometimes, in the depths of mid-winter, you just need a bit of an injection of colour. This room just jumped off the screen as I was trawling Instagram this week. The bright yellow sofa and gallery wall behind it are so cheery and positive.

Amara lives here with her family (she refers to them as ‘the herd’). It’s a rental property, however, she shows what great things can be done in a home that you don’t own. Have a look at the rest of her squares – she’s such an inspirational crafter and decorator.
