Auction Alert: Sale of 20th Century Art to be held at Prior Park, Bath

WILLIAM SCOTT C.B.E., R.A. (1913-1989) 'STILL LIFE WITH FRYING PAN AND EGGS'

Wotton Auction Rooms will be running a Sale of 20th Century Art at the National Trust property, Prior Park, Bath.

272 lots will be coming under the hammer on Friday 22nd July 2022, from 12pm. Artists represented include some of our old favourites such as Paul Peter Piech and David Gentleman – the latter well known for his postage stamp designs. In addition, we’ve been introduced to a few new artists that we’d like to find out more about; William Scott CBE, Anita Klein and Bernard Cheese amongst others.

If you register on the Wotton Auction Rooms website, you can leave auto and absentee bids. There’s a buyer’s premium of 21.6% and, if bidding via their website, an additional premium of 3.6% (plus VAT) will be levied.

Alternatively, you can bid live via the EasyLiveAuction website for a £3.00 flat fee or 3% of the final hammer price. The buyer’s premium still stands.

Unfortunately, the auction house doesn’t offer a packaging and posting service, so you’ll have to organise your own if you’re unable to collect in person.

Designer Desire: Lill Tschudi

Montage of Lill Tschudi linocuts

Lill Tschudi (1911-2004) was a 20th century Swiss-born linocut artist. Along with the likes of Sybil Andrews, Cyril Power and Claude Flight, she was a member of the influential London-based Grosvenor School.

She produced in excess of 300 different linocut designs during her illustrious career. Like the other Grosvenor members, her subject matter often included sport, transport and travel – conveying the speed and movement in that distinct style.

Her work has been included in many exhibitions worldwide; British Prints from
the Machine Age
at MoMA (2019/20), Cutting Edge: Modernist British Printmaking at The
Dulwich Picture Gallery (2019), The Cutting Edge of Modernity: An Exhibition of Grosvenor School Linocuts at the Osborne Samuel Gallery, London (2013), British Prints from the Machine Age: Rhythms of Modern Life, 1914–1939 at Museum of Fine Arts, Boston & MoMA (2008).

Prints of her work can be bought covering a range of budgets. Top dollar works come up for sale at auction houses such as Bonham’s and Christies with hammer prices from £2,000 to the tens of thousands. Pallant House and The Bookroom Art Press sell prints from £138.00. If that’s still too steep, there are prints listed on eBay for less than £20.00.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the work of Lill Tschudi and the other Grosvenor School alumni, there have been a few books & catalogues published on the subject; The Cutting Edge of Modernity: Linocuts of the Grosvenor School, Cutting Edge: Modernist British Printmaking and British Prints from the Machine Age: Rhythms of Modern Life. Tschudi’s 1933 Ice Hockey print (shown in the montage above) is the cover artwork for Impressions of the 20th Century: Fine Art Prints from the V&A Collection.

Nude artworks

Nude artworks may not be to everyone’s taste, but I like them; the different body shapes & sizes of the subjects, the different styles & techniques of the artists. Also, how the artist captures the likeness or essence of the sitter.

Two of the trio of pieces I’ve chosen are by favourite artists of mine; Lucian Freud and Tamara de Lempicka. I think there’s no better 20th century painter of the naked human body than Freud. We’d never be able to afford the real thing by either of these artists (we don’t have the spare millions required squirrelled away)… but a good quality print in a complementary frame can look stunning.

  1. Standing by the Rags print – Lucian Freud: £21.95, eBay
  2. Nude male print: £25.00, NOTHS
  3. Tamara de Lempicka exhibition poster – Chained Nude: £127.52, Etsy

Winter Morning

'Winter Morning' blog post banner

detail of 'Winter Morning' print by Edward Ripley | H is for Home

We do love a crisp, sunny, winter dog walk. This picture, a 1960s Athena original print on board, really captures the scene & atmosphere.

It’s on its way to our antique centre pitch – one of those items that’s hard to part with, but we’ve had the pleasure of living with it for a long time. Having said that, it might never make it – it’s stalled near the front door as we give it admiring glances all over again.

It’s by artist Edward Ripley and is entitled Winter Morning. We’d really like to view the original oil – anyone of you out there own it?!

You can sense that there’s real texture to the paint, particularly in the snowy fields.

The image is so strong though that it still makes a fabulous print!
