Price Points: Rustic artworks

Rustic artworks

I’m on the look out for something very, very particular to hang on a wall in our dining room – rustic artworks. It’s probably the most niche thing I’ve ever featured here on our blog.

We have lots of paintings, prints and other wall hangings that we brought with us from our old house. Unfortunately, very few of them suit the décor of this cottage. They’re either too modern, too colourful or the subject matter doesn’t sit well in this setting.

I want one or more rustic home fare, still life artworks. To explain, the subject matter needs to be rustic food in the home; either eating it, preparing & cooking it or simply just set out as a vignette. It can’t show a lavish spread or feast, that would be out of keeping with our humble cottage.

Secondly, I’d like the scene to appear as though it could be located in rural Wales (I told you it was niche!). It can’t look like it’s in the Mediterranean with olives and vine tomatoes or somewhere even more tropical with a bowl of mangoes, bananas and pineapples in a fruit bowl. Similarly, something obviously in a town or city wouldn’t look right.

Thirdly, I want it to appear as though it’s set in the early 19th century or earlier. No electric lights, kitchen appliances or other modern trappings.

One of the three (I’m sure you can work out which it is) on my shortlist ticks every one of my boxes. But I think it would look really twee and obvious – what do you think?

  1. La Soupière Blanche (The White Soup Tureen) by Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744-1818): £5.95 – £62.95, PosterLounge
The original oil painting is held in a private collection in Paris.
  2. Market Day in Old Wales by Sydney Curnow Vosper (1866-1942): £10 – £90
The original watercolour is in the permanent collection of National Museum Wales
  3. Two Peasants Feasting by Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685): $219 – $1,797.00
The original oil painting is in the permanent collection of Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister – Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

We’ve just received some lovely prints from Swedish online company, Dear Sam. We’d been looking for some wall art to decorate the space above the long, grey sofa in our sitting room area. They have such a vast range of topics and styles that they’re a great place to find the subject matter that your interested in – or simply to browse with an open mind, waiting for that moment of inspiration.

We were pretty sure that we wanted something quite calm colour-wise; and also nature-related to complement all the various found objects & specimens that we have dotted around the house – shells, stones, skulls, feathers and the like. After having a good peruse of the Dear Sam website, we eventually decided on a triptych of prints by the 19th-early 20th century German photographer, Karl Blossfeldt. They feature details of ferns as they unfurl and we think that they’re both beautiful and sculptural.

Once you’ve selected the image(s) that’s right for you, they offer excellent flexibility in terms of dimensions, mount, frame style and colour. The posters arrived promptly and securely packaged – and fitted perfectly into the frames without fuss. We liked the design of the clips at the back which made the job very easy – some can be very fiddly. Also, both sides of the acrylic glass come with a protective film, which once peeled away, leaves your finished posters pristine, scratch & smear free and ready for hanging. The finished result was just what we were looking for.

We’re really impressed with Dear Sam’s eco-credentials. All their posters are printed on high-quality, uncoated paper bearing the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and EU Ecolabel environmental labels for responsible forestry. Their printing facilities are 100% climate-neutral and their packaging materials consist of a mixture of recycled materials and/or materials from controlled sources. The company adheres to strict social, economic, environmental, functional and quality standards in their production.

6 perfect ways to decorate your wall space

6 perfect ways to decorate your wall space

We have so much wall space in our homes; in general, it’s a greater surface area than both the floor and the ceiling. Taking advantage of this area is the ideal opportunity to add interest and individuality to a room. Below, we’ve touched on a few perfect ways to decorate your wall space and, at the same time, express an aspect of your personality.

Collection of Polaroid photos and camera

Photographs

An current trend is displaying large groupings of Polaroid snaps. The square, Instagram-friendly format means they’re very easy to organise and mount.

You could display photos that were taken at memorable events that you want to remember – holiday & travel snaps, Christmas gatherings, birthday parties, wedding etc.

A feature wall of family portraits is a very popular option; school & graduation photos, formal family sittings, even pet portraits.

Collection of gilt-framed still life paintings of flowers

Fine art paintings

You may think that original paintings are expensive, but that’s not always the case. Granted, a genuine Picasso or Rembrandt is out of most people’s price range, but you can get affordable original oil or watercolour paintings for a snip. Charity shops and antique centres always have framed and unframed paintings in stock.

Choose according to frame type, subject matter, artist or style. Decide on pieces that you find attractive and think would suit the décor in your home.

Another good tip is to visit your local university fine art degree shows, the graduates are often selling their work that’s on display. You never know, you may discover the next big thing at the start of their career!

Posters

Posters have been produced for all manner of events or products, over a long period of time. Some of the world’s greatest designers and artists have turned their attention to creating them. You have a lot of options to go at if you want to create an interesting display. Perhaps a selection of travel posters of your favourite destinations or posters of your favourite movies might appeal to you.

There’s also a huge range of commercial products that you could focus on – fashion, automobilia, food & drink-related. Posters can be appealing in so many ways – graphically eye-catching, colourful and historically interesting.

Dark wall of mirrors

Mirrors

A collection of gilt-framed mirrors on a dark wall will decorate your wall space, making a bold, glamorous statement. If that’s not to your taste, you could choose an assortment that are grouped according to shapes; e.g. round or concave. Another idea could be to choose mirrors according to the era from which they date – Art Deco or Mid Century Modern maybe – whichever would suit your interior best.

It’s a well known trick that hanging mirrors on walls bounces much needed light around a dark room. Mirrors can also create optical illusions, making a small space appear much larger.

Textile art

Soft furnishings help to soften an interior; think cushions and rugs. Lesser used soft furnishing ideas include wall hung textile art in the form of tapestries and macramé works. The latter work really well in an interior that is decorated with furniture and homewares in wicker, bamboo and linen and floor coverings of seagrass, coir and sisal.

Collection of vintage carpt beaters on a wallcredit

3-D collections

In the past, we’ve delved into grouping homeware items in our creative collections series. Often, these are displayed on horizontal surfaces, but there are many things that can be shown off to their best on the vertical. There’s no end of possibilities.

Some displays show off collections that might naturally spring to mind – hats, handbags, taxidermy and the like. Others incorporate what, at first thought, might appear to be the most unlikely of items; carpet beaters, corkscrews, scissors, old paint brushes, jelly moulds. Just choose anything that you personally think might work in the space – interesting shapes, textures and colours.

We’ve seen some incredibly successful displays using unusual objects – they’re both decoratively eye-catching and fascinating to delve into. You can also get creative with the way that the objects are mounted or hung. Whatever you choose, you’ll end up with unique wall decoration… and you’ll have the fun of collecting the items too!

We hope we’ve provided some inspiration to help you decorate your wall space and make your home a one-of-a-kind, stand-out place to be.

Price Points: Nude artworks

Nude artworks

Nude artworks may not be to everyone’s taste, but I like them; the different body shapes & sizes of the subjects, the different styles & techniques of the artists. Also, how the artist captures the likeness or essence of the sitter.

Two of the trio of pieces I’ve chosen are by favourite artists of mine; Lucian Freud and Tamara de Lempicka. I think there’s no better 20th century painter of the naked human body than Freud. We’d never be able to afford the real thing by either of these artists (we don’t have the spare millions required squirrelled away)… but a good quality print in a complementary frame can look stunning.
