Designer Desire: Ib Antoni

Montage of Ib Antoni designs

We’ve been publishing our weekly Designer Desire series for about 3 years now, so you’d forgive us for forgetting who we have, and haven’t, featured so far. One of the items that we get contacted about most often is a vintage Ib Antoni poster (pictured in the montage above). It advertises Danish Fortnight at Neiman-Marcus in Dallas, Texas; we could have sold it dozens of times over! We’re really surprised that we haven’t researched and shared some of the other fabulous designs that he created.

Ib Antoni (1929-1973) was born in Esbjerg, Denmark. He was commissioned by over 150 international brands and companies such as Carlsberg, UNICEF, Philips, Lurpak, Volvo and Life Magazine.

As well as advertising and illustration, Antoni designed textiles and porcelain for Royal Copenhagen and Bing and Grøndahl. In 1968, he illustrated a sweet, little children’s book, Merry Cherry, a story by Henning Nystad about a starling in love with an unattainable cherry. The cover illustration can be seen in the montage above – second from bottom, on the right.

In 1973 at the age of only 44, he tragically died following an arson attack at Copenhagen’s Hotel Hafnia. His legacy work is being reproduced for sale by his family and a small number of original examples can still be found on Etsy.

Visit the official Ib Antoni Instagram feed to see lots of other examples of his work and a few really interesting contemporaneous photographs of his designs out in the wild!

Danish Fortnight at Neiman-Marcus

Vintage Neiman-Marcus Danish Fortnight poster detail

We thought that we’d take a closer look at the vintage Neiman-Marcus poster that we showed in yesterday’s Forthcoming Attractions post. As we mentioned, we’ve had this poster in storage for some time and have just had it framed. It looks fantastic!

Vintage Neiman-Marcus Danish Fortnight poster

It’s the work of Danish artist, Ib Antoni. He designed textiles, porcelain and lamps too, but it’s his posters for which he’s most famous. He was much in demand during his relatively short career. His list of clients is tremendous – from tourist boards to large manufacturing companies. Tragically, he died quite young in a hotel fire aged just 44. He’s much loved in Denmark and indeed worldwide. He left a wonderful body of work with over 300 poster designs and is one of our favourite illustrators.

The US department store Neiman-Marcus developed the concept of special fortnights to promote sales in the quiet autumn period before the Christmas rush. They started in 1957 with French Fortnight. It celebrated the distinctive culture, cuisine and fashion of that particular nation. They were a great success and continued up until the 1980s. Danish Fortnight took place in Dallas in 1964.

This extract comes from a local newspaper at the time:

Dallas’ Neiman-Marcus will open its Danish Fortnight tomorrow with royal Danes and Great Danes in attendance. And if it’s anything like the fairyland Swiss Fortnight of last year, start wishing that your husbands will find some business in Dallas during the two-week event. The specialty store promises to bring the greatness of Denmark to visitors, dramatizing the Tivoli Gardens with its imaginative play settings for children, the works of Hans Christian Andersen, George Jensen silver and the finest art of the country–its contemporary furniture and needlework. Dallas will join Neiman-Marcus in the exposition with a Danish Street fair sponsored by antique shops, Danish films and Danish entertainers in Dallas supper clubs.Northwest Arkansas Times, Saturday October 17 1964

There would no doubt have been some wonderful mid-century modern homewares on offer!

Amazingly, we acquired more than one copy of this rare vintage poster at the time we bought them. So, we could send one rolled up in a tube – you could then choose your own frame and indeed framer – and it will obviously be much cheaper & safer than sending the glazed version. This original poster measures 88cm x 61.5cm. Our blog readers will get first refusal, so get in touch if your interested.

Forthcoming Attractions: Mid-September 2015

Selection of vintage collectables heading to the H is for Home shop - September 2015

Here’s a selection of recent vintage buys heading shopwards.

set of vintage Beefeater steak plates

For starters, we have a classic bit of what is generally termed ‘vintage retro’ these days. These ‘Beefeater‘ steak plates scream 1960s/70s.

They were produced by English Ironstone Ltd in Staffordshire. Aren’t they fabulous? We’ve got some young bulls on nearby farmland – you won’t be surprised to hear that they’re not quite as colourful as these.

We’re staying in the same era with this fabric offcut.

Actually, the style is very similar – the same artist could have been responsible for both the plates and the textile!

Vintage Dumler Breiden 'fat lava' West German vase with wooden deer figure

This pair of items makes a nice little grouping – they would look perfect on a vintage, mid-century modern teak sideboard. We love the contrast of glazes on the vase – and the flash of orange of course. The stylised antelope is lovely. We come across similar wooden sculptures quite often, but this one stood out from the crowd. It’s particularly good quality in terms of material and skill of carving.

Yellow vintage fondue set

This fondue set is top quality for its type also – enamel pan with teak detailing, warmer and a set of six forks. It’s pretty much unused and a superb English mustard colour. Pop that on the sideboard too… ready for the retro dinner party.

Orange original vintage Anglepoise lamp

More vibrant colour with this vintage lamp – our favourite Anglepoise for some time. We love the stepped base, shape of the shade and bold red colourway.

It’s a Herbert Terry original and would look great gracing any desk or worktop.

And finally, onto the poster that’s in the background of many of these photos. We’ve had it for a while, but it’s been rolled up in storage. We’ve just had it framed so we’re counting it as a new item! It’s a vintage poster advertising Danish Fortnight at the department store Neiman-Marcus in Dallas. The poster is gorgeous – and you can guarantee that most of those 1960s Danish homewares on sale were gorgeous too!
