Price Points: Induction hob safe milk pans

Induction safe milk pans

We don’t tend to use our wood-fired range stove during the warmer months – especially with the recent heat wave. A couple of years ago, we bought a double induction hob for our summertime cooking. We have a set of cream enamel cast iron saucepans that we use on it every day. However, when all you want to do is warm up a little bit of milk or make some custard, even the smallest one is a bit big and heavy for the job.

We decided to look into what induction hob safe milk pans were available. There’s a huge variation in price, as you can see. I like the fact that the budget example from Dunelm has a pouring lip on both sides – it means that it’s suitable for use by both left-handers (me) and right-handers (Justin).

We went ahead and bought the mid-range option, the Emma Bridgewater enamel pan from her popular Black Toast range. It’s creamy white in colour, so matches our other saucepans. Many enamel saucepans on the market are lightweight and flimsy and don’t work on an induction hob. We’re pleased to say that we’ve given it a test run and this one does.

Manchester milk bottles

collection of vintage milk bottles from Greater Manchester | H is for Home

We bought this small group of vintage milk bottles last week.

They’re half pints and date from the 1920s/30s kind of era – they’re very sweet!

The bottle markings are interesting – each from a different local dairy.

These are all from Greater Manchester. The area would have had large numbers of dairies at one time – supplying households, local shops, businesses & schools. They’d be situated in the various districts & suburbs. This group of ten contains bottles from Salford, Stretford, Sale and Moss Side. The bottles have relatively wide necks and make lovely little vases for a spray of flowers.

They’re available from our shop singly at £6 each; perhaps you’ve got a small restaurant or café with about ten tables – they’d be just perfect for that – or a vintage-inspired wedding reception perhaps?

Kirkham milk jugs

There’s a distinct risk of double entendre in this post, but the design of these jugs is so striking & photogenic that we had to give them a quick blog mention.

These milk jugs were produced by Kirkham Pottery and we think it’s called the Chef & Stripe range. They’re such classic 1950s – the graphic lettering, the stylised dancing chef & waiters – and the distinctive red, yellow & black colourway.

We’ve just put the larger one in our web shop. It has a bit of wear & crazing, but still displays wonderfully – and is completely usable for milk or cut flowers.

Tuesday Huesday: Flavoured milk

This image really reminds me of my childhood!

Did anyone else grow up drinking “pink milk” and chocolate flavoured Quik? I remember the ad on television with the cartoon bunny that sang, “You can’t drink it slow if it’s Quik” – I searched on YouTube and there it was – I remembered every word! Apparently it wasn’t aired in the U.K. so it means absolutely nothing to Justin.
