Get their look: Modern vintage sitting room

I could spend a lot of time in this sociable, modern vintage sitting room. The space is dotted with two of my favourites – vintage ‘fat lava‘ pottery and original gulvvases. There’s a lot of colour, however it’s used thoughtfully – primarily reds, yellows and oranges – complementing the wood of the floor and furniture.

The original parquet floor is softened by the neutral area rug. I love the double-sided fire – heating two living rooms for the price of one!

We’ve acquired some lovely vintage homeware pieces in the last week or so – and there’s been lots of photographing and listing to do. Here’s a selection of our favourite recent additions.

We like to split items between the web shop, eBay shop and physical shop space so have been busy in the this month!

This mid century modern shelving unit was bought at auction recently. It’s for sale of course, but it also provides the perfect backdrop for other objects from the same era – pottery, lamps and so on.

Forthcoming Attractions: Early March 2016

Here’s a selection of this past week’s vintage buys – quite a blast of colour!

We’ll start off with the West German vases – in gorgeous, vibrant shades of orange. One has the classic bubbling, fat lava glaze and the other a more uniform pattern of impressed marks. We like both styles – and they look great together.

Next up, we have a set of psychedelic bull plates – not exactly subtle shades either! We do love this fun and eccentric range of dinner ware.

This bright red clock is wonderful too – both functional and beautiful. Produced by Metamec in the 1950s/60s it would provide a real flash of vintage style & colour to a kitchen or office wall.

We’ve also picked up this trio of waste paper bins. The one with flowers is marked Worcester Ware – a company who produced some fabulous, everyday metalware. They’re perfect for kids bedrooms or nurseries.

Less bright, but no less attractive, is this collection of garden and laundry items. Last week’s Get their look post featured a lovely traditional laundry area. It had a couple of the vintage washboards on the wall which looked great. We’re big fans of painted and galvanised metal, in general – our own garden is full of old dolly tubs, wash baths, florists pots, dustbins and watering cans. They look attractive, weather nicely – and don’t shatter in the frost!

West German vase collection

We’ve been Fat Lava fans for a long time. It was over 7 years ago that we first blogged about our West German vase collection. All the fabulous shapes and glazes make them a wonderful thing to collect. There’s much more information coming to light about the various factories and designers that produced them which adds further interest and insight. Books, websites and magazine articles dedicated to the subject have appeared over recent years.

We’ve seen quite an addition in our own numbers recently. As mentioned in Tuesday’s post, we bought 21 vases at auction last week.

There are some real beauties, including pieces by Dumler & Breiden, Carstens and Sheurich.

Some work well in small groupings…

…others are very impressive stand-alone pieces, such as this large, sculptural Carstens Luxus range ‘Beehive’ vase designed by Dieter Peter.

As well as adding a couple to our own West German vase collection, we’ve put about fifteen of them into our antiques centre space; they work very well in a large display. We’ll also add some to the website in the coming week – here’s what we currently have for sale in our online shop.
