Museum of London poster depicting a woman with basket of oranges. Designed by Tom Eckersley in 1977© Transport for London

Tom Eckersley (1914-1997) was a Lancashire-born poster artist. His bold, graphic approach lent itself to the kind of work commissioned by big corporations such as Transport for London, National Savings Bank, Guinness and Gillette. His style transmitted messages that needed to be attention grabbing, immediate, memorable, informative and often quirky.

For a look at lots more of his work, visit the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) and Rennart websites.

It’s getting harder to find nice vintage bedding – particularly unused. So we were very pleased to find these two 1960s floral sets – one in shades of orange, one blue. Each double bed set comprises top sheet, bottom sheet and pair of pillowcases.

This gorgeous biscuit jar was designed by Anita Nylund in the 1960s – this hand painted range for Jie Gantofta has such a distinctive look. You can also get tea, coffee, sugar, salt, rice, dried fruit and so on. We’ve even seen a jar for fish!

This zingy orange filing tray will certainly brighten up a dull office – but perhaps not a dull tax return!

orange plastic, 3-tier office filing tray

We love these vintage first aid cabinets – we’ve got a small one in our bathroom which contains the emergency items. When we say emergency we’re stretching things a bit – plasters, bandages, scissors & Savlon more like!!

This metal one is huge though – it could fit your entire toiletry needs. It dates from the 1920s/30s sort of era. The WRCC stands for West Riding County Council.

large vintage black painted first aid tin

Another great item from Worcester Ware next. We mention them quite often, but they produced some lovely metalware. This rice tin dates from the 1950s and features agricultural workers from around the world – tea pickers, rice growers, coffee harvesters etc.

Alongside the tin is this small pottery tureen. It’s from the Wasa range produced by Rorstrand Pottery – we don’t think we’ve ever had any of this before. We love the pattern’s simplicity & colours.

We’ll spread the items out between our webshop & antiques centre pitch – let us know if you’re interested in something, but can’t find it.

We’ve got some more recent vintage homeware purchases to share with you.

vintage boxed set of Sherdley 'Chubbies' drinking glasses

Getting hold of vintage items boxed & unused is always a bonus – this was the case with these fabulous 1950s drinking glasses.

We love the stylised leaf decoration – very typical of the era. As is the red, yellow & blue colourway.

vintage hand crocheted woollen throws and wire atomic coat hooks

More classic 1950s in the shape of this ‘atomic’ coat rack with its wooden ball finials. Red & yellow again!!

We can’t even begin to list the colours in the crocheted work – it’s a case of ‘the more the merrier’ when it comes to these vintage bedspreads & blankets.

detailed view of red vintage woollen blanket

We’ve definitely moved into the 1960s or 70s with this amazing blanket with its bold, organic design in black & red. It’s warm & cosy too – perfect camper van material!

vintage Binatone clock radio alarm

We can link via colour again for this alarm clock radio – the red & black of the LED digital display this time. It was produced by Binatone in the late 1970s.

selection of vintage Kathie Winkle crockery

On a recent fleamarket trip we came across this large collection of pottery on one stall. It was all designed by Kathie Winkle for Broadhurst Pottery in the 1960s.

The Mardi Gras range is a particular favourite of ours, but the various patterns look great mixed & matched together.

vintage Ercol beechwood rocking chair

Finally we move onto this lovely Ercol rocking chair with its original green striped cushions. We were very happy with this purchase!

It’s found a happy home by the kitchen window for the time being. It gets lovely late afternoon sun and is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea – well deserved after a hard days work of course!

selection of vintage items to be shortly added to the H is for Home shop including triangular corner shelf unit, desk lamps, bright yellow Habitat floor lamp, 1950s cream coloured storage tins, blue Hornsea ashtray, Hornsea "May" mug, red thermos flask, white Metamec wall clock, stainless steel tea strainer, "Gaybox" wall fitting, orange-handled aluminium colander and Scandinavian salad servers

Here’s a selection of recent vintage homeware purchases heading for our shop.

set of 1950s cream coloured kitchen storage tins with an orange-handled aluminium colander

We regularly come across these vintage aluminium colanders, but not often with groovy orange handles.

detail from a set of 1950s cream coloured kitchen storage tins

There are seven of these vintage metal containers. We think they’ve been repainted at some point – a long time ago and rather expertly it has to be said. The cream & dove grey colour combination is lovely.

vintage op art, red & white Thermos flask and vintage black & white Metamec clock

Next we have this drinks flask produced by Thermos.  So famous are this company for producing vacuum drinks flasks that most people actually call them Thermos flasks – in the same way people call vacuum cleaners ‘Hoovers’. This is a lovely example dating from the 1960s with a bold, graphic pattern in red & cream.

The clock dates from the same period. It was produced by another famous maker – this time Metamec. They produced this type of clock in many different colourways. They’re also well known for their sculptural starburst clocks.

vintage stainless steel tea strainer

This stainless steel tea strainer was made in Denmark. It’s neat & well designed – ideal if you’re a regular leaf tea drinker.

The Hornsea mug is one of a set celebrating the twelve months of the year. Each one features a couple occupied in typical activities for the month in question e.g. celebrating bonfire night in November, building snowmen in January, dodging rain showers in April and so on. This one’s for March and they’re being blown about in the wind.

blue vintage Hornsea Pottery ashtray

The ashtray‘s also by Hornsea – but a much simpler, geometric repeating pattern this time.

unmatching pair of vintage metal goose necked desk lamps

We have little & large of the desk lamp world. Well, the larger lamp isn’t that big, it’s just that the smaller one is very dinky indeed. They both have a really good mid century modern look. The larger of the two was produced by Anglepoise, the smaller by Tensor.

vintage "Gaybox" wall fitting in its original box

This wooden shelf system is so 1950s…

detail from a vintage "Gaybox" wall fitting in its original box

…not only the shape with its interlocking squares, but also the packaging – and its name of course – the “Gaybox”… wonderful!

vintage triangular corner shelf unit and bright yellow "Bobby" Habitat floor lamp

This corner unit also dates from the 50s – it would sit very nicely with blonde Ercol furniture. The bright yellow floor lamp is a much more recent product. It’s called the ‘Bobby’ lamp and is sold through Habitat.  We bought a pair in a recent house clearance auction. We like the colour, styling and functionality – in fact, Adelle’s been using it all week as her task light of choice for sewing.

set of vintage Danish teak & stainless steel salad servers

Finally, we have these salad servers in teak & stainless steel. These examples date from the 1960s, but are boxed & pristine. Great styling & quality materials – just a lovely piece of classic Danish design for everyday use.

All the items shown will be heading towards the website or antiques centre soon, but feel free to enquire about anything that particularly takes your fancy.
