Auction alert: Sporting Art, Wildlife and Dogs

European School, 20th century - 'Still Life of a Fish and Bowl'

The Sporting Art, Wildlife and Dogs auction may not be to everyone’s taste. Many people are averse to the hunting, shooting, fishing and horse racing pastimes. Saying that though, many of the items coming under the hammer are only indirectly linked to those pursuits. So, if you’re a dog owner or bird watcher, there may be things that appeal.

The sale – of 352 lots – takes place on Tuesday 31st May 2022 from 1pm.

• Items of jewellery delivered to UK addresses are typically sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, and other smaller items are couriered via DPD
• Larger items will be shipped via Bradleys Antique Packing Services by their experienced, capable and friendly staff
• International deliveries are professionally packed by Bradleys and shipped by recognised, trusted couriers who deliver on their behalf

The auctioneers also have a web page of recommended delivery companies.

All purchases are subject to a buyers premium of 25% plus VAT except for our Fine Wine & Spirits auctions when the buyers premium is 15% (VAT is not applicable to Books). When you successfully bid on any lot, the price you pay will be the hammer price (the value you bid at the auction), plus the buyers premium.

Also known as the Droit de suite

Artist’s Resale Right was introduced by a European Directive in 2006 to ensure that artists receive a royalty when their work is resold by an auction house or gallery. This Right applies to living artists and to those who have died within the last 70 years. This royalty is paid by the purchaser on top of the hammer price if the sale price reaches or exceeds 1000 euros. The amount payable is on a sliding scale – e.g. up to 50,000 euros, the royalty rate is 4% of the sale price. The maximum royalty a work can earn is capped at 12,500 euros.

Price Points: Rustic artworks

Rustic artworks

I’m on the look out for something very, very particular to hang on a wall in our dining room – rustic artworks. It’s probably the most niche thing I’ve ever featured here on our blog.

We have lots of paintings, prints and other wall hangings that we brought with us from our old house. Unfortunately, very few of them suit the décor of this cottage. They’re either too modern, too colourful or the subject matter doesn’t sit well in this setting.

I want one or more rustic home fare, still life artworks. To explain, the subject matter needs to be rustic food in the home; either eating it, preparing & cooking it or simply just set out as a vignette. It can’t show a lavish spread or feast, that would be out of keeping with our humble cottage.

Secondly, I’d like the scene to appear as though it could be located in rural Wales (I told you it was niche!). It can’t look like it’s in the Mediterranean with olives and vine tomatoes or somewhere even more tropical with a bowl of mangoes, bananas and pineapples in a fruit bowl. Similarly, something obviously in a town or city wouldn’t look right.

Thirdly, I want it to appear as though it’s set in the early 19th century or earlier. No electric lights, kitchen appliances or other modern trappings.

One of the three (I’m sure you can work out which it is) on my shortlist ticks every one of my boxes. But I think it would look really twee and obvious – what do you think?

  1. La Soupière Blanche (The White Soup Tureen) by Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744-1818): £5.95 – £62.95, PosterLounge
The original oil painting is held in a private collection in Paris.
  2. Market Day in Old Wales by Sydney Curnow Vosper (1866-1942): £10 – £90
The original watercolour is in the permanent collection of National Museum Wales
  3. Two Peasants Feasting by Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685): $219 – $1,797.00
The original oil painting is in the permanent collection of Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister – Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

Designer Desire: Lilwen Lewis

Montage of Lilwen Lewis paintings

A couple of weeks ago on a trip into Aberystwyth, Justin walked past Oriel y Bont – and an artwork in the window really stood out for him. He went over for a closer look and found that it was painted by Welsh artist, Lilwen Lewis.

When he returned home, he told me about it, and we looked online to see if we could find any information about her and discover any more of her works.

Lilwen is local to New Quay, a Mid-Wales harbour town 20 miles south of Aberystwyth. She studied art for 5 years; first to Carmarthen School of Art then on to Swansea School of Art to study Painting & Stained Glass and finally Cardiff College of Art, graduating from Cardiff University. She returned to live and work in New Quay after her studies and a five year stint teaching Art and Craft at St Clears Secondary School. She’s a member of Cardigan Art Society.

My inspiration comes from the landscape around my home walking through woods, farms and down to the seafront among the fishing boats. Observing the changing moods of the landscape and the people.

I like experimenting with different mediums and techniques. Going from realism through to semi abstraction. You never know how work will turn out or what it will lead to.
