Price Points: Heated propagators

Heated propagators

I bought a selection of vegetable seeds recently. I planted out the peas and the Brussels sprouts straight away, but it’s a little too early for the squashes and courgettes. Like tomatoes, these seeds need a bit of warmth to germinate; heated propagators would be very helpful in getting them off to a good start. We have a lean-to greenhouse, but it’s north facing, so doesn’t get sufficient heat or light until quite late in the growing year.

When it comes to propagators, to me, size matters. The peas that I sowed in my (unheated) propagator quickly outgrew it. The tips are already touching the lid, but the seedlings aren’t yet ready to plant on. is extra tall – almost twice as high as the shortest one. It means that the roots and first true leaves have a longer period to develop before the upheaval of replanting.

On our radar: Mini Moderns Moordale seed collection

Mini Moderns Moordale seed collection

This month saw the launch of the Mini Moderns Moordale seed collection. The assortment comprises 10 varieties of seeds – including cotton grass, bluebells, wild garlic and thrift – inspired by the wild flowers found on the North York Moors. The packets are miniature works of art, featuring the company’s Moordale wallpaper pattern design.

They’d make perfect stocking fillers for both a budding or accomplished gardener or nature lover.

On our radar: Wildflower seeds

Wildflower garden

Some packets of wildflower seeds are on our radar this week… are they on yours? Do you want to create a ‘mini meadow’ in your garden? You certainly don’t need a couple of acres to get a beautiful display of cornflowers, poppies, yellow rattle, daisies, red campion, borage and the like.

Just identify a suitable area – it will need decent light, but size isn’t important – and neither is rich soil. In fact, wildflowers such as the ones listed prefer poorer soil. Give it a good rake and scarify to prepare the ground (now is the perfect time of year to do it, which is why it’s come to mind). Then simply scatter your seeds.

You can get packets of wild flower mixes very easily in garden centres or online; companies such as Thompson & Morgan, Landlife Wildflowers and Meadowmania. You can also add small plug plants or bulbs if you like. Hopefully, next summer you’ll have an amazing spectacle to enjoy.

Wildflower meadows not only look good, but are great for nature too. We’re really keen to give it a go and are hoping to create mini meadows on the rough ground that surrounds our cottage.

Ilex Studio Acorn Vase® and Avocado vase®

As well as on Pinterest, we come across many brilliant products while scrolling through Instagram. That’s where we spotted these beautiful seed germination vases. They’re very much like traditional hyacinth vases but designed to accommodate an acorn or avocado stone.

You can buy the vases either with or without the already sprouting seed. As the vases are made of clear glass, you can watch the roots & shoots develop and grow into little saplings. Subsequently, they can be planted out into a garden or greenhouse and you can begin the process over again!
